....a neutered dog and a bitch tie?

Our vizsla bitch has come into season, and as she is kennelled with her entire brother she was taken indoors with her neutered son and a neutered GSP, to avoid any accidents, imagine my horror when eating dinner i heard what i thought was the tap running went to go and see only to find Mel and Bosh (the GSP) tied  chucked Bling out and stood with the pair and told Bosh it was his own fault so not to look at me like it :D when they were done i phoned the vets just to make sure everything would be ok as Bosh was neutered in October, the receptionist that answered the phone was only on her first day so she had someone call me back, the nurse that rang me back has been nursing for over 20 years and in that time had never come across this before she asked the vets and in the end phoned the vet we usually see just to make sure all was ok, none had ever heard of it before. Well all ok, vet said he doesnt think any sperm would have survived that long so Mel should be ok (phew!)

so anyone ever seen or heard of it before?

The only time I've heard it happen was with a chinese crested who came in to be neutered one day and then promptly went home and tied with one of the bitches :-D  He obviously saw it as his last chance at fatherhood and performed through the pain barrier!! Because it happened right after the op, the bitch had to have the misalliance injections

My friend's neutered Cavalier tied with one of her bitches once. No reason why they shouldn't if they retain the sex drive and the bitch is ready I guess. :-)

Just because a dog has had bits removed doesn't mean that he is uncapable ;) I'm sure someone on here did a topic on it, or it came up in a topic, a short while ago. I think (wasn't paying too much attention :) ) that it was agreed that a dog could still be carrying sperm for about 6 months after castration. I'll try to find it, but I'm going out soon so it might be a while. :)

I've heard of it before, I wonder if the time of neutering has something to do with it - i.e. if the dog was neutered after reaching sexual maturity or as a prepubescent pup.  Intriguing stuff!

 My older neutered spaniel will given half the chance mate and tie with any in season bitch, very odd even my vet had not heard of it to the regularity that he will try. He will still chatter when the bitches are due in season also

I've known several people whose neutered dogs have done this. It seems that if the opportunity arises ... ! :D Castration should only be regarded as a guarantee of (eventual) sterility, not lack of interest!

Several times. The weirdest one by far was when I had a neutered dog mate and tie with an entire bitch WHO WAS NOT IN SEASON! She was, however, on the verge of pyo!

Never seen it myself (don't own males) but have heard of it quite often, especially if the bitch is really determined to be mated.

Yes, we've had it as well.   Neutering doesn't stop them.    I'm a little concerned about introduction of infection as much as anything else

Yes, happens to a friend's bitch when she comes into season, her neutered dog always mates her at the 'peak' season time!

I know some one with a couple of toy poodles, the male was very.. er.. go-getty, so she had him castrated at 6mths. He tied with a bitch when he was 2 yrs old!

im glad that it isnt just bosh then :D, he will be 5 this year so he has sexually matured, never been anywhere near a bitch in season before and he had a look of horror on his face last night, so he might not do it again....until the next bitch comes into season

My neutered boy does it - neutered after sexual maturity though.

Neutered boy done before maturity has never had the chance but if he ever does ill be interested (get the chance that is i dont want him tying wtih a bitch even if he cant father pups!).

Unneutered boy ..... well he aint had the chance (and wont), but is 2 at the end of this month and shows absolutely no signs whatsoever of knowing anything about what his dangly gear is for!

Oh yes :D  I remember many years ago when we were renting a farm cottage, I had Molly in season & was shocked to find her & Barney (neutered) tied   What shocked me even more was later that day, Barney had only been outside a few mins, was a very irate horse owner off the yard telling me that Barney was tied with his bitch & if she had yet another unwanted litter it was all my fault & I would be paying for them   I remember getting on the phone to the Vet, he said a tie was possible but as it was over a year since he'd been neutered all should be ok but if any puppies did result then I should feel free to sue him  lol!!  I explained all of this to the other owner along with the suggestion that if he didn't want more litters then maybe he should keep his in season bitch out of the way (as opposed to free running at the farm!) & then get her spayed ~ he still continued to be antsey with me & lo & behold no puppies :D
