Topic Dog Boards / Health / Yellowy slimey diarrhea - Is this normal
- By AkitaGucci [in] Date 03.03.07 08:39 UTC
Gucci had an upset tummy last week. The vet said she had IBS. I gave her her tablets from vet and  I gave her chicken and rice for a day or so (she loved it). She had improved and went to the loo normal (firm) however today took her out and it was yellowy greeny (maybe a bit of grass) but slimey/salivery??? I am very sorry for the detailed description but I am getting worried now and not sure if this is normal. She has been sick in the past and that was yellowy saliva type, but out the other end - should I be concerned. I don't want to put her under any more vet stress just yet, so thought I'd ask on here first. She seems to be herself though, still playful. Thank you.

The yellow sick is actually bile from their stomach, usually accompanied by grass. Her poo doesn't sound at all normal though. This can be attributed to many things, general upset stomach, something she has eaten, intollerance, pancreatic insufficiency etc. Obviously I am not a vet so am unable to advise what is wrong with your dog. If she was mine, I would starve her for 24 hours apart from water avialable freely. I would then give her a small amount of bland food, personally I wouldn't in this case give a pasta or rice dish but something like chicken and potato. If you mash the potato don't add any dairy to it at all. See how she goes after not feeding and then giving a bland food for a while, hopefully this will clear up as quickly as it started.

Hi AG,
oh poor Gucci!
You will have to monitor her diet from now (if IBS has been diagnosed) and be consistent, as (Im sure youve been told) it can reoccur and flare up again otherwise.
Just a couple of tips, look into using probiotics now for her (her intestinal flora will need a rejuevination)
and be aware of  the (over) use of Carbohydrates... clinical experience suggests that IBS, together with other gut related allergies and intolerances are closely correlated with unsuitable carbohydrates in the diet. These may also, over a period, not only cause a range of symptoms from mild softening of the stools to acute colitis, but are associated with knock on problems such as mal-absorption.
For example, the BARF diet, which excludes the use of any carbohydrate in the diet, springs from the clinical experiences of a veterinarian called Billinghurst who found that his patients with gut problems got better when they were removed.BUT From this came the notion that dogs are not evolved to digest grain carbohydrate. They are in fact! but... the type and amount of grain carbohydrate is important in order to prevent digestive disorders commonly associated with the overuse of certain modern cultivars.
I use this probiotic.
dont forget to watch what treats are given too ;) (I notice in Waitrose they now stock Feelwells Probiotic dog treats ..very similar to James wellbeloveds cracger jacks :) )
Hope this helps, good luck and best wishes for poor Gucci!

another but, HG, it is trial an error.  Some colitis suffers do well with minimal fibre some actually improve with an increase, this is human as well as doggy :).  We see this in the very many dogs that do well on Chappie for instance, very high in grains.  My Dandie who had appalling colitis as a youngster settled very well on Chappie and continue to thrive to her 16 years when we discovered Beta also suited her very well.
As HG say, AG, the key is discovering what suits and being very consistant in all things including treats I am afraid :)
The bacteria in live yoghurt can be very useful in adjusting the balance when things go a bit haywire too, you only need a spoonfull a day.

Tree barks powder from Dorwest herbs is very good also.
