Hi everybody.

Wonder if you can help me?? OH has been offered a job up in Dundee which is a big promotion from his current job. It would mean us relocating from Yorkshire up there though!! Does anybody live in the area or have any experience of the area? Is a huge relocation what with all the dogs and all the horses so want to be 100% before I agree!!! My Dad used to live nearby and always thought it was lovely but just wondered if anyone had actual experience!!!

Thanks

I don't know where you live in Yorkshire so i don't know how noisy, near to motorways you are etc.

Personally I wouldn't live in Dundee city itself.   I live to the west of Dundee in the area that's know as the Carse of Gowrie and that's where I'd be looking to buy property if you have a good amount of cash to spend for something for horses.    The houses in this area will always sell again.   And you've a good link road in the A90 if you want to get into Dundee or Perth.  Only 45 minutes from Edinburgh, an hour+ from Glasgow, same for Aberdeen.     The rush hour see's you stuck in traffic for no longer than 15-20 minutes if you're unlucky.   Dundee does have the 2nd highest council tax banding in Scotland, something to consider.

There's good areas of woodland in and around Dundee & Perth for dog walks.   I would say more to the west side than the east side, property in Carnoustie/Arbroath/Forfar etc. is a bit cheaper but lacks what I would say good dog walking areas, more agricultural land.

The weather is probably like Yorkshire, when it's good it's great, when it's skanky, it's skanky!

The TSPC will have a list of property currently for sale so you can check what you get for your £'s.   But remember it's 'offers over' here, so a house selling for £160,000 means the seller wants more for it and sometimes it can go for £20-£40,000 over the o/o price!  Perth solicitors property centre is another link to try.

If you aren't sure of area's, PM and I'll give you the lowdown!

I was born in Fife and lived there till I was 8, and went to nursery school in Dundee... Have to say I don't remember much about Dundee except I liked it, but Fife I remember a lot more and it's lovely... would be quite happy to go back and live there, and have thought about it. Admittedly I'm remembering from 20 yrs ago, but the countryside was lovely and that hadn't changed last time I went, used to go on loads of bike rides, and lots of lovely wee towns...

Hi Paula. We spent about 8 wks in Dundee as a family while my husband was on a course. We loved it! I have really fond memories of loading my car with the Tesco shop whilst looking at the beautiful mountains across the river Tay! There were fantastic country parks around which were virtually deserted- and after being used to south east London it was heaven. Weekends were spent touring around places like St Andrew's which is a smashing little place. I seem to remember Broughty Ferry being a nice place to live.
My 2 boys still remember their time there even though they were only 5 and 7 at the time. Good luck!

Broughty Ferry was nice (I grew up there :) ) but it has started to go downhill recently. There are more and more houses being built east of Broughty Ferry/Barnhill that have changed the whole look to the place :( I used to walk my dogs in those fields :D

As Christine has already said, try west of Dundee, or northwards. There are plenty of places to visit and the road system isn't too bad. Don't be put off by the 2 lane motorways on your way up, we don't tend to do 3 lanes up here ;) There's just not the traffic (except at rush hour) :)

You would probably get more for your money going northwards, especially if you need land, try the Forfar area, it has great links to Dundee. We live in Fife but property with land is quite expensive in North Fife which is nearest Dundee and you need to pay bridge tolls, perthshire is even dearer. I went to Uni in Dundee (long time ago)and thought it was great then, but there is a lot of development going on in the centre and it will look great when it is finished. Like any city it has its bad areas, but on the whole it is a great place to stay I think, has more of a large town than a city feel about it and the natives are friendly :D . New shopping centre at the Overgate is really nice.
There are certainly a lot worse places to move to, I'm sure you would love it.
