Topic Dog Boards / Health / Nursing bitch has lost her coat
- By Reesy [nl] Date 27.02.07 16:25 UTC Edited 27.02.07 20:02 UTC
Hi guys

Need your help on this one.  My ******* bitch has lost her coat, this happened on her last litter and the vet gave her an injection of hormones.  Her coat came back within a few weeks.  When I called them today to get her booked in for this injection, they said why don't you try evening primrose.  Has anyone given this to their dogs and did it work?

But don't all bitches loose their coats after a litter?  Mine go practically bald, anytime from 8 weeks after the birth.

My other bitch has never lost any of her coat.  Just looking of ways to increase the re-growth

Even human mums lose more hair than usual after giving birth. It grows back in its own good time. Hormones are funny things. :)

This is very true JG...but why did it have to grow back curly :D

Because you'd been eating your crusts, of course! ;) :D

In my breed you are lucky to be able to have a bitch back in coat by the time her pups are due to be shown.

This means when you breed from a bitch you loose pretty much a whole show season.

Haven't shown my girls since Richmond,a and they won't be fit to be seen until Bath.

It is annoying as Lexi first time Mum is in lovely condition and you wouldn't know she had fed pups, but she is loosing her coat.

the earliest I have been able to show a bitch was Jozi 4 1/2 months after a litter at an Open show where she went BOB and was in last three for BIS, she looked tidy but had very little coat.

Sounds like something out of a Jane Austen novel :D

We use EPO for hormones with our girls.  Especially the younger ones leading upto and few their first few seasons with extra dose as it calms them...reduces teh chance of bitches oing funny with judges when due for their season :)  Also seems to help skin/coat condition :)

I found with mine a lot of the coat loss is due to the pups rubbing it off -once they are big enough to stand up whilst suckling they rub it off with their claws! It comes back on its own in time. What I have found to speed things up , including after a moult, is Keeper's Mix.

Thanks guys.

My girl lost loads of hair just on her tail I gave SA37 during and for a good few months after, it is now 7m since the puppies were born ,her tail fur has returned and her coat is in wonderful condition .

I would like something to help re-growth of coats. Merlot's tail looks like a washing line with a couple of sock's hanging on it, not the done thing for a Bernie, She is 18 weeks off her puppies now, does the keepers mix really work? I have been thinking of giving it a try but not sure if it would help?

I also heard keepers is good also restore I have also used that in the past when my girls are going through that inbetween stage with thier coat.
But I think it will grown back naturally anyway in time.

I must say mine have had better coats than before with the Keeper's Mix, the colour is more intense. Was dubious to start with but am very pleased.

Ooh, Evening primrose and Keepers mix, excellent, shall have to remember that for my long coated bitch! Is that from Dorwest?

Like Starryeyes, I gave my girl SA37 for her first litter, and she looked amazing, wouldn't have known she was or had been feeding pups.  She lost very little coat and her condition was excellent.
On her second litter, I didn't use anything and there was quite a difference, she lost a lot of coat and looked awful for at least a couple of months after the pups had gone to their new homes.
It may have been coincidence - but nothing else changed (diet etc)
