Topic Dog Boards / Health / Diarrhoea - no reason?

Molly has had diarrhoea for the past few days & I can't figure out why!  There has been no change in her diet, lifestyle etc but for the past 3 nights she has been waking me up about half 3ish & going for what I can only describe as very runny & noisey poo's! :( When she goes during the day it is a bit thicker but still not the normal consistency.  I've done a search on here & in the past mashed potato & chicken & rice have been suggested, also starvation for 24 hours was mentioned, which is always what I do when it happens to me but is it safe to starve her for a full 24 hours?  She is her normal self otherwise! Should I just take her to the vet & get their (expensive) opinion?

Yes it is safe to starve for 24 hours as long as they have plenty of water.  However that is usually done as soon as the dog has an upset.  As this has been going on for 3 days she may already be rather dehydrated so if it was me I would see a vet.  She may have picked up a nasty bacteria that requires antibiotics for instance.

Took Molly to vets last night & although they can't be certain, they've given me a course of antibiotics for the next 7 days & to see how she goes, probably is bacteria, thanks Isabel!

Hope she is better soon :)  You might try giving a little live yoghurt daily to help build up the good bacteria in her gut again as unfortunately the antibiotics will knobble those as well.

Thanks, I'll give her a pot after I've had my museli...:)

Just a teaspoon will do :)  The bacteria multiplies rapidly in the warmth of the gut.

mmm, I'd agree with that.. and also I've tried Lactosym too which seems to work well..
Hope doggy feels better soon..X :-)

I had a similar problem with my GR female last year we hadnt changed her food, cow pats the lot, anyway caught her eating leaves in the garden (around Oct) and rang my vet to ask can Sycamore leaves be toxic to a dog, yes came the reply and when I looked into it there are so many plants and leaves etc that are toxic and can cause diarreah. Primroses are a prime example especially this time of year, could this be it??
