Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / What do BARFers use for training treats
- By djlynwood [gb] Date 26.02.07 20:48 UTC
Just looking into this BARF thing from all angles as Im considering this for my GSD.

I usually use home cooked liver treats, polony, hot dog sausages or cheese.

How would this affect the diet with regards to some things being processed like the hot dogs etc?

Thanks
Dale

I use homemade liver cake or sardine cake in the main but have also used carrot, cheese and hot dog sausage (rinsed to get the brine off and cut into very small pieces). I feed a raw diet but also use dry kibble as a treat sometimes - our local pet store usually has small sample packs free to customers and I get the toy dog sample for our GR as the pieces are tiny so do not add much to his daily ration. It also means that if I were to run out of fresh meat , or he had to stay somewhere elsi in the event of an emergency etc, a meal of kibble wouldn't have too dire an affect on his digestive system :D

I know a lot of raw feeders probably wouldn't use kibble for treats but it works for us :D

The fact that your dog might be given other food for use as treats shouldn't make too much difference IMHO - unless you are feeding huge quantities of treats in which case you would just adjust the amount of food your dog gets in total to avoid putting on excess weught.

Like Harley said, giving your dog different foods for treats shouldn't make a difference.
I feed all mine a raw diet, and for training I use pork scratchings :) (NOT the sort you buy over the counter ;) but from the same place I get the meat)
I have, in the past, used cooked liver (because raw makes a mess ;) ) :P and dried tripe sticks broken into small peices, and cheese, and cooked sausages :)

As said by others - I too don't worry re: treats as much - they get tripe sticks, bulls pizzle etc.  Also for training as use either hot dogs, cheese, ham, chicken, liver etc.  As Missie said as long as its not a 'whole meal' then wouldn't really worry to much.

You could always feed nature's Menu treats :)

I feed a raw diet but for treats, I use cooked liver, cheese, ham and very occasioonally a digestive biscuit :)

I like digestive biscuits, I think it would be 'one for you, one for me' if I used them LOL

Dee - how about one for you, one for me one for the dog? :)

Depends on how good you are at obedience ;)

So is that individual biscuits or packets we are talking about? :D
