My question is similar to the one on coughs below, but our 11 month old puppy had the Nosivac vaccine a couple of weeks ago & since then, every now & again sounds as if he is having an asthma attack. We are going to ring the vet up tomorrow, but wondered if anyone could say whether this could be a side effect to the vaccine. It is worrying to see him in distress, so hope someone can help please.

According to Intervet they can have symptoms for up to 4 weeks but suggest you see the vet if you think it is severe as he may require antibiotics.  Now and again does not sound too bad.

According to the manufacturer's data, mild sneezing and coughing isn't unusual after immunisation.

There is a condition known as 'reverse sneezing' where a dog has what seems to be a short-lived asthma attack, where he's sucking in air with a wheeze, spreading his ribs as he does so. This is very common, unconnected with any vaccine, and harmless.

Thank you both so much, you have put my mind at rest, but may phone the vet just to be sure, as the reason we had him vaccinated isthat we are going away for the weekend & it will be the first time that we have had to use kennels for our dogs. so would like to make sure he is fit before we go, as I will be bad enough having to leave him, without him not being well!!

Just a thought, as you describe it as sounded like an ASTHMA attack, is he perhaps not just having inverted sneezes? Sounds more like it to me.

Reverse sneezing information.

It can also be caused by excess stomach acid. I get it myself! My Papillon gets it from certain types of food but I've learnt what to avoid. At Christmas I could tell straight away when my mother had sneaked him food he shouldn't have had as he started at once! She was SOOO busted LOL! :D

It sounds like a mild case of Kennel cough to me, which is not at all uncommon after the vaccine.

I think it was probably the reverse sneezing & has happened about 3 or 4 times since he had the vaccine, but you know how we worry about our dogs! Hopefully it will stop soon, as it is nearly three weeks since he had it done.
Thanks again

Diane

The Kennel Cough vaccine is a live vaccine so these symptoms are not uncommon. Very good information given earlier about reverse sneezing by Jeangenie
