Hey all. My friend is going to get a puppy at the beginning of the summer holidays however she has never had a dog before. She is on the same course as me so understands training techniques but I am looking for good links and book recommendations that I can give her to look at. I had lots but unfortunately I have changed computor so have lost them all.
The type of things I am looking for are:
Toilet training with and without a crate as not sure what she would prefer
Puppy socialisation (examples of where to go so a tick chart would be good)
Basic commands - sit, down, settle, bed, recall etc...
Any others you can think of as well. She is interested in Clicker training. I can explain all of these things but I think it would be easier if she could have some solid information that she can look back to.

A good start would be a copy of "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey. There's a lot of sensible advice in there. :)

As well as the ones mentioned I also like Ian Dunbar's Before and After Getting Your Puppy. The book covers a lot of your list.

Here's a really good one, it's about BITE INHIBITION, encouraging puppies to play bite so that they learn to have a soft mouth around humans.  Something many people in Britain could do with learning if the current discussions on TV are to be believed ;)

If they could get to Crufts in march they'd have the perfect opportunity to meet the breeds they're interested in and quite a few they may not have considered.  Often the breed you think is for you can prove to be quite different(bigger, hairier, smellier etc) when you meet it in the flesh :D :D

She is coming with me and I said we would go to discover dogs and see the breeds that she likes.

Remember to meet some of the other breeds as well, my sisters and mum were aghast when I said I wanted a Bedlington (Ugly creatures, too thin, Terriers too noisy etc...) but once they actually met mine they were completely surprised at how cute, quiet, loving and biddable they are, not to mention non smelly!  they are now total converts!

I used to be besotted by Mini Schnauzers, then I got to know a few, lovely dogs but I couldn't live with the coat or the temperament personally and they are much too noisy for me!

I like to recommemd Jean Donaldson's book "Culture Clash".  It really helps you to see the way the dog thinks.  I thoroughly enjoyed that book and it's probably the only one which I still pick up and have a read now and then, and I bought a lot of books the first 12 months of getting my first puppy/dog.
