Hi all my dogs have got feas could not get frontline only johnson's flea and tick drops. Used it on all bar the pregnant one she is 34 days along. I have rong the vets he said to use flontline. Is there anything anyone canthink of to give my girl. thank you

Frontline is not contraindicated in pregnancy.  I think you are better treating her effectively now rather than later when it may remain on her fur when she is nursing.  If you don't treat effectively the litter risk getting fleas would could drain them badly and treating young puppies is not recommended for Frontline at least.

Frontline Spray can be used on puppies from 3 days of age, but is a POM (Prescription Only Medicine) so can only be obtained from a vet. Frontline Spot-on is available without prescription but can't be used on pups till they're 8 weeks old.

That is true, it is not a product I generally use so rather forget about it but I still think it would be better to treat mother and hopefully put off having to treat the puppies at all.  Even if it is safe to use I don't fancy the idea of Mum licking them.

I agree, better to treat mum prior to whelping to save having to do the whelps as well. The OP would do best to consult a vet about which product would be safe to use during pregnancy. Over-the-counter products tend to be somewhat ineffective.

I personally don't like to use any spot-on treatments, mainly because my breed has a tendency to sensitive skin (they even have a skin condition all their very own! ) so I find the Frontline spray to be the safest. :)

I only ever use the spray which could be used on the bitch now, and if needed on her after the pups are 3 days old thereby not needing to actually do them.

I've never had any problems with the spot-on I suppose a lot would depend on which product had been used before and is known to be tolerated.  I'm still not comfortable about using any skin treatment that might be licked by mum or taken in as the pups suckle I think the OP has to really get on with it now and hopefully won't be faced with that possible situation.

A helpful tip: Frontline Spot-on is generally much cheaper from online pharmacies such as Vet-Medic or Hyperdrug than from your vet. :)

I'm really pleased that I read this thread, I didn't realise that I could now get Frontline spot on without prescription, even though my vet sometimes gives me discount it was always cheaper to get on the net.

The last time I tried to order some and went through the whole process, it came up then asking for my vets name and address to authorise the product, at which case I logged off, feeling that my vet would think me awful not buying them from him. (I know I shouldn't but I did.)

So now I can buy it without him knowing that is great, I can save money and not feel guilty too. :-)

Do be careful where you buy it from though.  I am sure the two links that JG has given are reputable but there are a lot of counterfeit drugs available on the net at best ineffective at worst down right dangerous.
- By Carrington Date 24.02.07 23:40 UTC
Yes, your right and right to warn, I did read that on a post here not long ago and how they aren't even the products they say they are  I'm trusting JG's sites, she's usually :-D  (don't let me down!)  spot on with things. I'll only use those two sites.

>spot on with things

Hahahaha! :D Like it!

I've never had a problem with VetMedic and have been using them for years. :)

I've no idea why the various types of Frontline differ in their legal categorisation; Frontline spray and Frontline Spot-On Combo can still only be obtained from a vet (or over the counter in France!) but ordinary Frontline Spot-On no longer needs a prescription. I have no idea what the difference is between the affect of the chemicals could be to warrant the variation!
- By Isabel Date 25.02.07 10:44 UTC
Combo contains another active ingredient which presumably is the one still under prescription only and I'm guessing the Spot-on and Spray vary because the Spot-on is already in a measured dose.

Being to the vets this morning he rong the makers of frontline & they said frontline spot-on is save to use on pregnant bitches. So the vet adviced to use it on my pregnant girl. I only hope & pray that it does no harm to the growing pups.
