Hi !! my mums poodle eats occasionally !!! but very tentivivley (sp) i was staying with my mum recently & i saw Bobby in agony, he was straining with his head pushed foreward and in obvious pain !!his poo was solid one day & slimey & runny the next. mum offers him chicken wings ,he sniffs & walks away !! he wont eat dog food of any kind but will sometimes eat cooked chicken or liver. eating is obviously not enjoyable for him. i suspect coliitus or irritable bowl. he has had blood tests , all ok (£50.50 !!!) vet suspects the same as me but suggests a course of antibioticts ???? any advice most welcome !!

Hello Caron

Let's be clear, I'm no poodle expert! :-D

I am pleased to hear that the blood tests were ok and that you are in agreement with your vet about suspecting colitis or IBS.

Although he may just not feel like eating because of his digestive troubles, your first sentence about "tentative" eating could suggest dental problems as well.  Does he have healthy teeth and gums?  Might be barking up the wrong tree entirely but thought it worth a mention. :-)

Yes we used to have toy poodles and I was also thinking it could be something to do with his teeth.  My mums poodle had to have all hers out at the age of 10 1/2 years old but she was absolutely fine and still managed to eat dry food.

hi, his teeth look fine, but his breath is very smelly . my mum says he only eats every couple of days , which is probably when he is so hungry ,he has to eat ! the vet weighed him yesterday & he was 11.5lb and the vet says this is ok & he isnt underweight for his size.

our youngest dalmatian pup has collitis and we now feed him on a diet of complete salmon and potato dry food supplemented every other day with a portion of 2 scrambled eggs with goats milk.  The difference in him over 4 months is unbelievable, he adores his scrambled egg which we started off with a small portion and slowly increased until we were sure it wouldnt upset him and also his complete food, both of these i believ have helped him to gain weight and he is now thriving.
