Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / How come he remembers.....

OK I've posted in Idle Chat about what happened to DD while we were away and his basic lack of concept of what anything is. Alhtough we did have a glimmer of hope yesterday - he actively searched out the 'rustle' of a packet of crisps:D And yes because he looked for it and sat patiently waiting with a hopeful look (the DD of old) he got fed a whole packet:D Yes I know you shouldn't:)

How come though he remembers to go to the toilet outside? I have to tell you it would be a nightmare if he didn't:D He also will do sit, lie down, give paw and will now come to you. Why can he do all this but seems to have no concept of house hold noises and peoples movements etc?

As it's sunny today we are going out, we didn't make it yesterday........so wish me luck:D

Sounds like it is the difference between *habit* and *new* noises and pictures......the toileting thing will be an ingrained habit , learned over a long period and doesn't possibly require any thought process'. Whereas the sounds and pictures his brain receives are all viewed as *new* and therefore disturbing.

I think the same thing happens with severe amnesiacs ...they remember they need to use a loo for bodily functions but do not remember their familes or places ....

Hoping you continue to see improvements daily {{{hug}}}

I would think it will be similar to skills lost by stroke patients which can be random. Friends of mine had a dog who had a similar attack he appears scared to walk on a wet surface, I assume it has something to do with how he perceives reflected light

did the vet check his vision out,-wonder if its impaired now ? that could cause the symptoms youre describing

Believe me the vet was going no where near his face when he saw him:D From what I've heard any way. But yes you could have a point, we are due back there on Tuesday always providing I can get him, DD that is not the vet, in the car, out the car, along the road, through the door, into the vets etc *sigh* not much stopping us then:D
