Welcome to the forum Heather :-) We have a few members who own and breed westies. I am sure someone will be along shortly to advise you.

Hi Heather,
Welcome to the group/board. I think this one may find you will different opinions but take what suits you are tyr them all.
I have 2 westies and a cat. Cat was there first which generally helps when puppies but harder for you with an older one.
I think you are going to have to be very firm with the dog right away.
When he approaches the cat. Tell him no firmly shout him to you then overly praise him and reward him. This will take more than a few attempts but keep at it. it will hopefully come right.
Resuce dogs can take as long as 1 year to settle in especially if they have had problems at another home.
My boxer bitch ( doesn't live with me now and nothing to do with the cat) used to torment the cat, one day the cat whacked her so hard the boxer never did it again.
Don't worry if you think the cat will leave or not come back , it won't it knows it's home and feeding place they are smarter than that.
Good luck.
Pam
