Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / The Kevin stage??
- By MariaC [gb] Date 10.01.07 14:59 UTC
Our 9 month old Golden Retriever Jasper, who seems  to have been through every naughty behaviour possible is now a very well behaved doggy :) Could this change of behaviour be permanent or is it the calm before the storm?

I'm asking as I thought he would be going through his 'kevin' stage about now  could he have bypassed this, or could he have been through it and come out of it quickly?

Don't get me wrong he still has his little 'puppy moments' especially jumping up people, but for most things when we tell him 'NO' he stops - we are a little perplexed, but very pleased!

Maria :)

If it were one of my medium sized breed I would say lull before the storm, as ours are at theri worst at 8 to 18 months.

Wishful thinking Maria :D  He'll be a VERY unusual GR if he's got over it that quickly! :P :P

Sorry to disappoint you but our Golden is 22 months and is only now becoming a well behaved doggy.  Her teenage stage started at about 11 months.

I dont think Misty has even reached that stage yet and as she is now approaching 11 months, we have a lot to look forward to then!!! :D :D :D

you and me both Kerri :D

Well, he has been so good for a couple of months now :)  and as he was a little terror when he was really small  I thought that his puppy/kevin stage may have got combined somewhere along the way, and he has come out quicker than normal because of it??
One can hope

From what you all say we had better batten down the hatches then

Of course miracles can happen and he could be the exception that proves the rule! :D
- By lyndob Date 10.01.07 17:19 UTC
Make the most of the good times. Hopefully for you he may prove an exception but I would be on my guard. My GR is 10 months and he seems to go through really good moments and then when you are not expecting it he turns "Kevin" on me! I think they are trying us out to see what they can get away with acting all goody then slipping in a bad one when your not expecting it.
Whatever happens do not be disheartened because everyone I talk to has been there or is there now, very few exceptions.

Our GR is 16 months old and not only do we have a "Kevin" but all his mates as well :D  So at what age does a GR usually start to get the ASBO removed? ( She says desperately hoping 16 and a half months is the answer).
- By Goldmali Date 10.01.07 23:33 UTC
At about 8 years Harley. :D Goldens don't tend to act adult until then -IF at all. :D

In my experience the Kevin stage in Goldens (dogs not bitches) tend to start at 18 months. I took the gold test with my youngest Golden at 11 months so that we sort of bypassed it LOL.

Ooooh sounds just like a Boxer then....
Approach Kevin phase as they are approaching 12 months old
and erm if you are lucky could be approaching 'normal' at 2 years old.
But never grow up..even when classed as a veteran...

I agree Goldmali. My golden oldie (aged 14) still has the occassional Kevin moment!
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 11.01.07 17:09 UTC
Earl (an 11 month RR) entered the 'pre-Kevin phase' at about 7 months, is now building up the the 'full-Kevin phase' and I suspect he'll be out the other side when he's about 11 years old and on his last, failing legs......

Hi Maria
we thought Rosie was growing up when she calmed down at 6---the rest you know! Good luck with Jasper and fingers crossed

Well Jasper's good behaviour didn't last for long, he pulled me over yesterday and I had to hold onto him as we were by the main road so he dragged me, only for about a couple of inches but enough to hurt my knee and my pride as it was at a set of very busy traffic lights:eek:

I realise he probably hasn't reached his Kevin or hormone stage yet as we visited a breeder friend and 3 of her bitches were in season and Jasper was not interested in them at all - much to their dismay

So I spoke too soon, the worse is yet to come :eek:

Don't take it to heart Maria - all our dogs are good at showing us up occasionally! :)  Hope you're not suffering from it today though.
- By MariaC [gb] Date 16.01.07 12:32 UTC
the knee is sore and the arm quite stiff :(
- By Annie ns Date 16.01.07 13:15 UTC
Knees can be really sore when banged - very little padding. :(

Ibupofen gel high strength is really good for bangs and muscle pain.

Calm before the storm - definitely

Well Jasper surprised me yet again this morning, he walked over to me in the kitchen, jumped up and then put his front legs (which I call arms) around my back and his head on my shoulder and there he stayed for a couple of minutes :)  How cute is that?

Now he is just curled up under my desk - although he is chewing the photo copy paper

There's nothing to beat those spontaneous displays of affection is there, Maria  ? :-D
They make you feel soooo special :)
- By Annie ns Date 19.02.07 10:30 UTC
Ah, starting the day with a golden cuddle - luverly! :)  Watch out, he's probably about to do something wicked and is softening you up!! :D
