I have found a fabulous breeder of Cavaliers who is minutes away and owns some fantastic dogs and does some good show wins (aswell as judging! :D). She has a website and it doesen't say anything about showing, all about health and temperment which I love. But I also still have found a really nice breeder of Cockers who shows and produces lovely pups etc and has a house bulit around the dogs and atm she has 19 of them  But including the puppies
I just need some advice. I work Part Time 4 days a week, 6 hours a day but I could possibly get someone in half way through to play, feed, walk etc but I just wondered what would cope better Cavalier or Cocker? Which barks more? I have spoken to a behaviourist but she told me what I already knew

Can anyone help please?
Thank you in advance,
Haz x :) :)

Well I'm biased having two Cavaliers  ;-)   I'm no expert but don't Cockers require a lot more exercise than a Cavalier? Maybe something to take into consideration long tern when the pup grows up and needs a few walks per day especially on the days you are out at work. Good luck whatever you decide.

I have 2 Cavaliers and an American cocker. The Yankee is more fidgety around the house and likes to trot around looking for mischief, whereas the Cavaliers are more likely to snooze peacefully on my lap, except for when Ellie has her funny half hour throwing her toys around! :-) The Yankee is more of a scavenger in the park, but I know plenty of Cavaliers that are as bad. I do find that when I am in the house but the dogs have to be shut in another room, like when I'm eating, that the Cavaliers whimper or yap for attention whereas the Yankee mostly waits quietly (except for surfing the edges of the work surfaces for scraps!). A working bred cocker would certainly need a LOT of exercise and training compared to a Cavalier, but there is less difference with a show bred cocker. My three are all happy with anything between a 10 minute walk and a 10 mile walk! :-)

Hiya,

Thanks for the replies. I was origianally after a Yankee butb then my breeder sold him as the other people came in a posh car and 3 kids! :( but I was now thinking of a English. Do you find when 1 of your Cavaliers is on it's own it whines?

I had an elderly cav who took well to being left at home when i was at work now with two younger ones they get rather vocal when they realise I am getting ready to leave.  Would you not consider an older dog as puppies can stress more when they are left

I can only speak for cavaliers but the same may apply I suppose for a cocker.Cavaliers thrive on human contact ,in fact I find they must be trained to be left alone as they can be very clingy. If you could structure your puppies days to be left for no longer then a few hours at a time it would probably be OK as it would be sleep time. If someone could visit to break up the pups day and relieve the boredom you should manage but I don't think its fair to leave a single pup alone for long periods. Good luck with your choice.

In my experience of Cockers it is a bit marginal probably at the limits of what they would be happy with.  They would need a decent amount of exercise on top of this of course which, logically, means more time away from home, social stuff and all the other things you need to fit into a day. In otherwords it might work but would require some dedication to it to minimise the risk of it not working out.  And what do you do with the dog if it didn't work, are you prepared to alter your life, perhaps reduce your hours to accomodate or would the dog need to go?  You really have to consider these things before this sort of commitment.

Ok. I went to see pups today and have fallen in love. The English cocker would be a Show type and then I get a call from a stranger saying she has a Mini Schnauzer available  So now I'm very confused!

I would stop and consider what you want then make a descision. Good luck

The Cavs certainly whimper if I am home but they are in separate rooms, but if ignored they go to sleep. At the moment everyone is living alone as my bitch is in season! They generally go to sleep if I am out of the house too, but there's no denying they are much happier curled up next to me on the sofa. :-)
