No, he's not naughty at all............. just a normal pup, doing normal pup behaviour.

Don't particularly like the squirting water at him in training classes, yes it can be a useful defence to shock a dog, but to use it regularly at training classes in my opinion will make him defensive towards this act and he will probably learn to react to it rather than against it.

How he acts on his walks is again something that we have all been through, once they get to the rebellious stage, then the best thing to do is invest in a long training line to keep him under your control and practise your recall constantly whilst out on walks with this line.

If there are no dogs in site then by all means let him run and play off lead, but keep extremely vigilant and when you see another dog straight back on line, a long line will enable him to still meet and greet his friends and allow you to pull him in when you come across strange dogs, you can also tell him no and gentle when he is grumbling at other dogs too, and keep those treats handy to reward his good behaviour.

At this age and possibly for the next year no matter how well you train him and trust him, he will  have off days and disobediant days, so always be aware of that protect your dog by keeping him to hand and making sure he can not bolt off.

By the way dogs love training and don't find it boring, play search games at home too, and keep those cuddles coming for his good behaviour as well as treats.

The first two years of owning a dog are the hardest and most rewarding, the more you put in now, the more you'll get out of your dog in future years. :-)

He is being a normal puppy,it sounds like the trainer at puppy class needs extra training to me:mad:

We had that problem when we took Jack along to obedience as a small puppy....They insisted on squirting him and he wasn't going to be having any of that! We withdrew from the classes and just try to do our own thing, but I was sorry as it was mainly for socialization that I wanted him there.
Somebody told me.  There are no naughty dogs just clever dogs.
Karen :-)

thank you for your replies i have bin looking around for a new class spoke to one who seemend ok and he said dennis could go along for 5mins if he gets hyper just take him out then try again and he dont use water guns.where i can i get a good training line and do you put them on there collar as he wears a half choke. i just took him to park and he was a bit naughty my fault some one was talking to me and he was watching two small dogs go by and did he lunge and grumball i think i let him eye ball too long ,  i seem too harsh i tell him no and yank his lead instead of just pulling him in but when he sits by me i treat him ,not going to them classes no more, again thank you let you know how i get on, i must say in doors he is so lovely follows me helps with the washing ha ha and loves to learn new things and he behaves better in the woods if i see a dog coming i say wait, then lead on and then say walk on and he skips past ha ha.

Hiya,

You should be able to find a long line online if you do a search - or I'm sure someone will come a long and let you know of somewhere you can buy one.  Just a word of warning though, don't attach the long line to his collar this could do serious damage to his neck if he was going at full pelt and the end of the line got caught on something or similar.  Always use a harness when using a long line, much safer! :-)

just a update to let ya know we started a new dog class and even thougth we were in and out 3 times it did go well as what the trainer wanted me to do was to keep feeding dennis while i slowly got closer to the other dogs when he lunge or bark take him out by the 3rd go we played tuggy while the dogs went arond him for a few mins  and he said what i could do was while walking him out on his lead and i see a dog coming feed him lots but if he lunges just walk on ignoreing his bad behavour or turn round, he said it will take a while, it seems at the mo if he sees a dog across the road he wants to lunge and growl it wasnt like this before unless the dog done it to him and i dont want him castrated that would be the last thing to do, have any one else had good results doing the feeding a lot when walking past things the dogs dont like to get the attention on to u, the recall is not too bad if it me and him but if he sees something i go in stupied mode and get toys out to try and distract him ha ha we are working on that, the good thing is he plays with dogs in the park a rite looney .

hi all another update sorry for keeping on , bin taking dennis to a park where there are so meny dogs he dont know what to do ha ha hes bin very good better there then my local park, im still doing the lead walking but for only 15 mins a day around my streets i havant walk passed another dog yet so not sure if he would react like he has bin doing, the reason im writing is to say we went to the dog club again this week the man there seems much more helpful but i was wondering as he said cause dennis gets sooo excited there, he  wont eat, lunges a odd growl especilly if another dog does, he wants me to stand away with him on lead just watching if dennis goes into one just ignore him he said by the looks of things dennis wants to be every bodys mate, i was just wondering what every body else thinks. dennis does get over excited with people you only got to smile and u av ad it and i would like to use a whisle for recall cause i think he deaf ha ha how would i go about it. thanks rach x
