both my dogs were taken today to the vets and i was told they both have kennel cough now a friend of mine said she was told many years ago that i could not go to my parents (without mydogs) because they have a elderly dog and i will carry the kennel cough on my clothes and i forgot to ask the vet about it can anyone here give some sort of advice on this as i was also planning on going to watch a show on sunday (on my own)

no to going to show and no to going to parenets.
firsty i lost a litter of puppie at 4 to 8 weeks old to kc and to see them go though that would NEVER EVER WANT ANY ONE ELIS TO GO THOUGH IT.
kc is air bound virse and yes you can carry the virse on your clothers,so going to a show you will be carring the virse so tjr dogs at the show may go down with in 14 to 21 day time plus like me i have a litter at home at the moment if i went to a show with one of my other dog they could been it back and the puppies may go down with.

young and old and unwell dog will die though secondaly infections from kennel cough

I would ask your own vet. My vet told me it was passed between dogs, and that you can't carry it on your clothes. The infected dog coughs and the others dogs inhale the virus - it won't survive on your clothes. If you have pups at home your other dogs could bring it back from a show but not yourself. When mine had kennel cough last year I didn't take them to agility but (on the advice of the vets) still went along with my friends to watch. None of the other dogs I patted - and my friends dog that travelled in my car got it so I think the vet was correct :)

When a suspected KC dog comes to our vets we ask them to wait in the car, then when the vet comes in they are taken straight through the waiting room so there is little chance of cross contamination. If it is KC, once they are gone the vet will swap rooms if possible and change her scrub top, so presumably it is catching to some degree. However, the vets are often in contact with KC dogs and yet their dogs don't go down with it, and often the vets have their dogs with them at work or in the car, so it presumably is only likely to be carried to the very young, very old or very sick animals. My animals have also never caught KC from me (i'm a vets receptionist), despite there being a real outbreak last year. I have been told that i am actually likely to boost their immunity by bringing back very small amounts of the virus, but not enough for them to contract it.

I withdrew from a judging appointment on the advice of my vet, as we had a nasty bout of KC going round our 9 dogs , all in the house, and the vet said that there was a risk that I might carry it on my person.

Don't they tell you now to wash your hands frequently, as the human common cold virus can be carried by contact , more than it can by sneezing!
