Topic Dog Boards / Health / 1st heat prolapse

Last month my girl at 9 months came on heat.  Everthing seemed to be allright, till day 9,  when she had a vaginal prolapse.  It only lasted for 3 days as on day 12 of her heat her swelling disapeared.  Then every thing was normal again.  I had 2 vets opinion, 1st was to stitch her up to avoid infection and the other was to keep her as clean as possible.  I opted for the second one, because I was afraid of the anesthetic. Unfortunately both agreed that if it happens again I will have to spay her.  Did you ever experience something similar (3 Day prolapse) and how was the second heat.:confused:
Many Thanks

Sorry - I've no experience with vaginal prolapses in dogs, but plenty of experience with sheep.    In sheep it's reckoned to be a hereditary weakness, and it's recommended that the ewe isn't bred from again (prolapses usually happen around lambing time).  I don't think you would want to know the first-aid remedy - and it certainly doesn't involve an anaesthetic!!!

I would guess that in bitches it's caused by the hormonal surge 'loosening everything up' for want of a better term.

I don't think I would risk letting her have another season if she were mine - I'd spay her in about 3 months' time.

Would be interested in other people's views who have bredds which are inclined to do this (don't boxers do it?)
