Hi everyone,.Fiona again.
Does anybody have any ideas how to stop my 8 month old GSD jumping the child gate which separates the kitchen from the rest of the house as i do not have a door there yet! He has stitches at the moment so i really need to stop this. Everytime he does it i put him back into the kitchen but he still persists in jumping it and just now he pulled the whole gate down on top of himself!!
Please Help. Fiona.

All mine jump the baby gate, so it is only effective in keeping baby puppies, and visiting dogs (most) in the kitchen. I would take it down before he hurts himself, and invest in a crate when you need to confine him, or put in a door, which might be cheaper but not as portable.

My freind has an extra tall gate she bought from Argos, this might just be too tall to jump.

If he's not trying to climb over, you can always use two gates on a door. If he is trying putting weight on the gate, there's a type that can fasten into the doorframe instead of using a pressure bar. You could try it just for the second level.
good luck,
toodles
In the back of Dog World there are always ads for dog gates which are at least twice as tall as baby gates, but the same principle.

Hi Fiona:) I agree with the Argos post although they're probably just as expensive if not more than a new door? With it being a GSD why not higher the gate slightly so it's too high to jump but yet not high enough to fit underneath?- a quick solution? Good luck- fortunately with my GSD only being 5 months I've not yet had to deal with this one:)

I have just brought a dog gate from the ad on the back of Dog World (£37.50 plus P+P) after borrowing one for a few weeks and so far it has been very successful. It is about 42 " high. I would add though that I have a double gate around this high in my kitchen which the blacksmith made me to keep my dogs separate from each other so they are used to this height being a barrier indoors (not outdoors).
I would think if you had one of these and then hung a *few coke cans filled with pebbles from the door frame so they hung at different heights above it, it might discourage them from jumping.
*Or even a lot of coke cans - would make an different door curtain to ones ones with beads or chains :D

You think you have problems! We have had to remove the latches from all the doors in the kitchen and hall to stop the dogs opening them and eating the cat food. So far even Madame La P. hasn't worked out a solution to this one, but the only way to open the doors now is with a small screwdriver, and its b****y inconvenient when you forget your screwdriver. I've never climbed through so many of my own windows in my life!

hi all
i have a child gate, and lady does love to jump but if you keep telling them no as i did with lady she should stop doing it, lady has know that from a pup that she should not jump this gate and so far she does not do it when the gate is closed that it she knows not to jump it. but when the gate is open she can come into the living room. but you must be very firm with them.

:D :D Sharon, non dogs owners would just be amazed at what some of us dog owners subject ourselves to :)

My niece and her rather posh boyfriend are coming to stay for a few days next week - I can't wait to see what James makes of having to carry a scewdriver and/or climb in and out the windows :D!

Moose our youngest has learnt how to open the baby gate rather than jump. It takes her a while. We lie in bed at the weekends after we have fed the girls and listen.
It takes her about ten minutes to undo it and then you hear the sound of thump, thump, thump as she bounds up the stairs then takes a running jump from the middle of the landing onto our bed. A lovely wake up call by a labrador lump !!!:D

We use a baby gate for Duchess (5mo Aussie) and I've never seen her jump it but last night, after putting her to bed, she ended up in our room!

Not exactly sure how she got out but obviously she did, the only way she could have ended up on the floor next to is to have climbed the gate. Heres hoping this isnt going to be a regular occurance!
I feel for ya!

Just fixed the dog gate and noticed it had a little speaker on it so got out screwdriver (shades of Sharon here) and put in batteries. They soon came out again - as soon as you open the gate a siren goes off!

Hi Fiona
I have a tall dog gate from Argos across my kitchen door. My GSD's do not jump it although I know they could in an emergency....
I would certainly invest in one for your pup. If he's a determined and agile jumper it won't be sufficient to keep him contained, but you could raise it a few feet and place some boarding across the bottom so he doesn't see a gap to try to dig through or he will dislodge it. You would just have to step over it every time but it would make it difficult for him. One of my GSD's can climb a vertical scale so if yours was as determined as that (and some of them are!!!) then you could also think about placing a board across the top as well so that you would have to climb through the middle. But this would be a real pain if you had anything larger than the gap in the gate to get through!!

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the advice on my GSD jumping the gate. Have put a large throw blanket hanging from the ceiling to the floor and close this when i close the gate and so far so good it has stopped him jumping it! If he gets bored of that idea and jumps again i will definitely invest in one of the taller gates. Thanks again.

Hi Fiona
My Damson pulled her hip out of its socket earlier this year by getting caught jumping a child gate, and it cost £££££££s to put her right - she's fine now, and hopefully will pick up this season, and got 4th in Open bitch at Richmond yesterday, but it was a long expensive haul getting her there!
So don't take too many chances......

Hi Jo. That scared me reading your message but touch wood Tyler has not jumped the gate since i put the curtain up. Hopefully in the next week or so i will be getting a proper door fitted so no more child gate!!
Fiona.
