you all know that i have had a litter on monday,this breed have their tails docked some are natuel bob tail to,i am a member of the docking breed council.
on monday at the puppys check up i booked appiontment for today with my vet that has docked my last litter two years ago.to have their tails done,
i wrote a letter and detail of the dam/sire the puppies ect so he could keep in his file,got there at 9,30 he took the puppies then 5 min later came back with them stating that he was not happy in doing it,beacuse of the vet that was stuck off a couple of week in the dog papers,
he had to ring the royal vet college and his insurancer to see what the sitaution was,,rebook to go back that 12.00.he rang me to been in the list of dogs that could be docked.so i took the whole packet from dbc.
got there again with mum /puppies. he still was not happy with the letter beacuse some of the dog where going to pet/show home as well as working so he didnt do them ,so i came way again with dogs with tail,which the dog can still be docked untill april.i rang the dbc to see if there was another vet local in the time that i could go  to have them done today. told the dbc about the sitaution,this as been the same story over the last couple of weeks,

so my puppie are keeping their tails now i can not put the stress on mum/pups traveling here and there and pulling their health at risk bye traveling.

all beacuse of the govement rules.

Oh Terri, what a shame!!!You must be soooo frustrated There is so much confusion and grey areas over the new legislation that it is no wonder that vets have been less than keen to carry out the procedure. I think though you are absolutely right to leave the tails on though now, you don't want cause any more stress for mum and pups.  Still can't wait to come and see them!!!

Unbelievable isn't it. It makes my blood boil.
Glad you made the decision to lessen the stress levels of pups & mum though.

Hope you don't mind my asking the questions and please excuse my ignorance as I don't kow the ins and outs of docking, but my questions are: would it be detrimental to the dog's health if their tail isn't docked and if you wanted to show them would it prevent you from showing them?

It wouldn't be dterimental to the dogs health by not being docked, however, if these are going to be worked & the dog catches the tail, it may need to be amputated under GA. There are the obvious risks of a GA.
It would not prevent the dogs being shown at present. After April 6 it will.

I can understand where the vet is coming from but it was pointless phoning the RCVS as it is them who are pushing for a complete ban! My vet used to dock any breed that was customarily docked but since the incident with the vet a few months back, she will now only do Gundogs & ONLY if the owners are clients.

I know yours are gundogs but what I was trying to get across was that many vets who will dock are very twitchy about it now & some have even given up since the recent case.

i think alot of them will be twitchy about it,

My CDB vet travels about an hour to me.  Of course I have to pay his expenses in that but I would not like to take a litter in to a surgery anyway unless I really had to.

i rang cbd but time was runnig out,plus i didnt want the dam/puppies to travel miles or go into anothe pratcie and pick up kennel cough i lost a litterwith kc 4 years ago so for the health issues i could not be borther or take that risk,

if he stated at 9.30 am that he didnt want to do it, but left me on a bit of string untill 12.30 bye that time it was get late.he new four weeks ago and monday about the litter and he did a good job on the last litter 2 year ago no problem and i have been there over 30 year and trust him, but he was not happy beacuse it a very grey area at the moment.

No, the vet comes to me.

All but one of our vets will refuse to dock at all. THe senior partner will only dock if they are definately going to be working dogs and that they are current clients.
I'm sure they all look lovely with their tails, and soon they won't look unusual at all.

It has now been announced that there will be a total ban in Scotland, no exceptions for working breeds
I contacted the CDB and at the bottom of their automated reply was this statement:

Latest news. Docking will become illegal after the following dates so the CDB will no longer be able to help members have their litters docked from the following  dates:

Wales - 31st March 2007
England - 6th April 2007
Scotland - 30th April 2007

Please DO NOT join expecting help if your litters will be born AFTER or close to the above dates

the issue isthat i am still allow to have my dogs tails dock but it the vets that are  not carring out the work incase they are stuck of the list.
my vet didnt get a yes or no reply from rvc today ,

it as really hack me off with today results.but hey they are health and doing well but i will make a statement in their kennel name when register them got  list line up and really to go in 3 weeks time so finger cross that i get them,

Could you let me know where you got that info from please? I've checked the cdb website, as I have been doing frequently, but cannot find any update on the docking clause of the AWB.

Do you not know anyone on your shoot who either knows a vet who is sympathetic to the damage that working dogs can suffer?  I was very lucky and our vet was a keen shooting man who understood exactly why he should dock.  However, he did refuse to dock a litter of dobermans (who ended up with docked tails anyway ).

Because the farmers who shoot are often "in the know" this really helps locate a sympathetic vet.

I made sure I'd contacted him a week before the birth to discuss this fully.

Looks like I was even luckier than I thought - last Friday I got my puppies done by the vet who did my previous 2 litters.

We are lucky in our area, although I don't breed ESS a friend does, I go to help when her vet comes out to Dock and Dew claw, never been a problem. Last week we were told that he is still prepared to do the pups but needs to see relevant proof that these are going to working homes , a shotgun certificate was acceptable !!!. Although some were not going to working homes this apparently will cover the vet along with a signed document that he had drawn up.
