Hi
Im not really sure if this is a feeding or health question but here goes.
Sox had his breakfast as normal yesterday morning - Lamb Naturediet - and he normally has 2 meals a day. I try to give him bones too when I can get hold of them and did so yesterday afternoon which he loved. As he was tucking into his bone a vile smell eminated from his vacinity and I assumed that it had come from his rear end. Its not unusual for this to happen as he has quite a sensitive tum and every 2 or 3 months sufferes with severe squits.
This continued into the evening and I was surprised that even after he did a poo the smell was bad. I stayed with him during the night in case he had the squits and it continued all through the night. It wasnt until this morning that I realised that the smell was coming from his burps and it seems to be the smell of the food he had in the morning. I am a little concerned as a) I have not experienced this before and b) the smell is vile, our whole house smells this morning! He seems ok in himself, wanting to play and has had a couple of poo's this morning but didnt want his dinner last night and has refused his breakfast this morning. Last night I can understand as he had eaten the best part of a huge bone but Im surprised he hasnt eaten this morning.
Has anyone experienced burps to this smelly degree before? Should I give him something, if so what, to help with the burps? (He doesnt seem to be struggling). Is this likely to be a symptom of something else?
Apologies for the wierd and vile question so early on a Sunday morning and thanks in advance for your help.
Caroline
I give my dogs bones a couple of times a week and about 30 minutes after a couple of them burp foul smelling obnoxious gas, esp my older boy, it lasts about 4 hours then we have it out the other end. I have never been worried by it but the smell gets everywhere. I suspect in your boys case it is caused by the bones. Try in future if giving them, give a larger marrow bone rather than bones that can be injested such as ribs etc. This should eliminate the smell.

The only problem with marrow bone is that too much marrow can give them the squits as well which is something the OP's dog suffers from anyway so perhaps you could remove some of the marrow before the dog eats it.

Are you sure he hasn't eaten anything he shouldn't have such as a sock or something as that can make the breath smell terrible! I would just have him checked at the vets to make sure it isn't anything a bit more sinister.
Hi there,
I agree with Emz, vet check first.
But I think his refusing food is nature's way of cleansing his system, like fasting.
As long as he is drinking water, I wouldn't worry for 24 hours, then give some plain boiled rice and chicken...

Sorry all, I didnt get an alerts to your responses so didnt realised you had answered - but thanks anyway.
It all turned out ok.I think he was constipated because a few hours later the same smell was coming from the other end. I think that the bone firmed him up a bit much and he couldnt pass it easily. It calmed down in the evening after had had a poo. The next day he poo'd about 10 times but very small hard amounts and then back to normal the next day.
Pureed veggies with the next bone for balance I think!
Thanks for your replies though :)
