Okay all you brainiacs out there,we have a seasoned, stud dog, fully health tested etc,
but we are having an interesting problem to say the least, the visiting girl is on her 14th,day of her season,is flagging her tail like a lunatic, really standing,
we are getting really good matings, the dogs keen, good to handle etc,but as he drops his two feet onto ground the tie breaks, now they are coming back Tuesday(oh yes, cough, cough,he is always fully out and very swollen,)this has happened twice now,Saturday and of course today, the female is not in any way upset,no struggling, allowing herself to be handled, now she is a maiden bitch, any clues, the owners are lovely, and she has had all relevant health checks etc, lots of homes waiting for resulting pups,
all ideas welcome

Maybe he just needs to be 'held' in place until a full tie is achieved?

Sorry if that's not of much use,  I don't have dogs only bitches, but I have noticed on a couple of occasions the stud dog owner holding the dog once the tie has been achieved for a couple of minutes before allowing him to turn

uuuuuuuummmmmmmm he weighs eighteen stone, the bitch is about 16,so to hold him on top of her is nigh on impossible, but we tried that the second mating, and bitch could not stand for too long with his weight fully on her,
thank you so much for answering though,

Mabe her hymen is stopping the dog from tying? You may only be able to get a slip mating but I suspect the problem lies with the bitch especially if she is a miaden bitch.

dont no if this helps but i had the same problem when breeding my bitch, the stud was experianced and my bitch was maiden and the same thing was happening whe he turned the tie was breaking.
the stud dog owner said it could be something as simple as my bitch needing a wee so she couldnt hold him in
so we had a break eris had a wee and 2 mins later a tie was made
8 weeks later 7 healthy puppies

well Bek,we've done wee's and poo's,as we thought the same on second attempt, and still no tie,now am wondering if shes arriving a few days early,we have one bitch of our own that we cannot breed until seventeenth day,so they are coming back Tuesday,

In my breed I have always been told if the bitch isn't ready she won't hold the dog, and a tie will break if the dog turns quickly (which ours are wont to do) before he is totally engorged.

I had this happen with my Kizi.

As a maiden I picked day 13 and 15 as being the most likely to cover all bases, the first would still be in time if she was early and the latter wouldn't be too early if she was a later ovulater.

As I don't drive the stud was brought to me, and on day 13 we had a very brief slip (seconds).  The biblical quote of sowing seed on stony ground came to mind.

On day 15 I thought the same had happened as the dog turned almost as soon as he mounted, but they were in fact tied for a good 20 minutes, the result the largest litter I have had to date.

well Brainless, this is theory we are now working from,
and um don't really think I want to know about the biggest litter yet, four Mastiff pups are just lovely, hahahaha
as I said before one of our ladies will not stand until day 17,so I think we are in for a week of fun and games,
thanks ever so for answering

This is my opinion also, but she does not seem uncomfortable,no yelping, squealing etc, even when he attempts the tie, when he initially stops the pumping action,he is still fully inside her,we have to do very supervised matings, and my partner is um, very involved, teehee,

oops that was for weima, thanks for answering also

Just to say, I've had pups born (9) after a short tie of one minute.

We had a proper tie when my boy has mated bitches, but my book says if he is achieving penetration but not the tie, you can gently hold them together for 10 minutes so that the ejaculation continues even without an inside tie. Assuming a suitable size breed of course!

Goldmali, to be honest he is not breaking away within seconds of tieing as such, and we stood with them rear to rear for at least two mins on the second mating,so we may be in luck.trouble is I am kind of starting to feel guilty about charging them a stud fee,I know it sounds daft, but I want them to have their moneys worth

I'm assuming that you're checking he is actually inside? Whoever is handling the back end, should check if he is actually in then wrap their arms around both dogs - holding him there for a few minutes. Usually that's enough to make them tie - if not then I'd just stay latched on for as long as he's inside her, you can keep checking with your fingertips.
- By Wendy T [gb] Date 12.02.07 08:00 UTC
oh yes,we are definitely checking, and fully hands on,in,etc,we may try just doing some sort of bear hug on their nether regions, and give them at least five minutes, but really not as easy with dogs of this size,so if doing this should I at least allow his front feet to go to one side of bitch and touch the ground,or try and keep him on top,my this should be fun,
thank you so much for all your advice, will let you know on Tuesday if we actually get a tie,we now have bets on as to whether or not she is still standing at this point hahaha,oh the joys of breeding

Yes, a big bear hug type of thing :)  I would have someone hold their back ends together while someone else moves one of his front legs over so they're standing side by side.

Good Luck!
