  Not a very sexy subject I know LOL but has anyone tried machine-washing or any other method of cleaning inside wellies??

Mine are only about 10 years old (LOL plenty of wear in them yet), but they do pong, and when I visited friends today and took off my boots to go indoors, their dog wouldn't stop snuffling around my feet and drawing attention to them!

You could scrub inside them, then stuff them with newspaper to dry (takes days, though). I'd try sprinkling talc (or athlete's foot powder, just in case!) inside them first, and see if that helps. :)

I think bicarbonate of soda absorbs smells or you could stash a couple of air fresheners in them when you aren't wearing them that would absorb the smell but they would still have the bacteria in them.

Definitely Bicarbonate of Soda.

Sons rather expensive wellies are now drying next to the dehumidifier after they filled with water when he climed into the river to free our cocker spaniel from the brambles.  She was sinking fast!  I'll dust them with bicarb when they are dry.

OK thanks, I'll try the bicarb  - do I just sprinkle it in then shake it out the next day?

Yes or vaccuum it out!  Don't wear black socks or walk on a dark carpet after taking them off for a few days but they'll soon be OK.

I have heard (but not tried) that deodorising cat litter (stuffed inside socks) stuffed in wellies helps dry them out as well as removing the pong!

You can buy deodorizing inserts for all kinds of footwear.  I think they have a layer of charcoal in them.  We often store seasonal footwear with a dryer sheet inside, though I find they go a little "pongy" too.
