hi all, i have a 7 year old longhaired unspayed dachshund bitch. about 8 days ago we noticed that she had started drinking loads of water and weeing excessively.  her urine was like water with no colour to it at all.  i immediately took her to the vets and since then she has been tested for everything from a water infection to kidney, liver disease, cushings disease, diabetes and pyrometra.  everything has come back negative which is a relief but also not knowing what is causing this is a nightmare.  it is around about 8 weeks since her last season.  she is due to go back to the vets tomorrow for tests for diabetes insipidus(?) but for the past two or three days she has been urinating much less frequently, drinking less and the urine she produces is much yellower in colour.  the test for diabetes does sound quite awful and involves her being catheterised and sedated for a number of hours. i know that it is the vet i have to ultimately listen to but does anyone have any experience of anything like this? she seems virtually back to normal but can symptoms like this just disappear on their own without any treatment? thanks for any advice

My IW boy was tested for diabetes insipidus and he came through it with now problems. However if the problem seems to have resolved itself you vet may well decide not to do the test. If you can bring a sample to the vets he can test the specific gravity of the urine. If that is normal I wouldn't think he'd do the test. Your vet sounds as if (s)he is very on the ball and has tested for everything my boy was tested for.

BTW with my lad it just turned out that he liked to drink a lot of water. It is now over 4 years simce he was tested for everything and anything. He still drinks gallons of wated and wees for about 5 minutes when he gets out, but he is very healthy.
