bitch of a friend had 11 pups shes very ill i,ve offered to take 5 and try as my bitch only had 1 10 days ago plesae any advice welcome as not done this before they are coming in the next hour
Sorry Welshie, can't offer any useful advice other than to be very careful as she may violently object to pups other than her own. You'll have to watch her very carefully.
Wishing you the best of luck - I hope it works out well.

I'm afraid if the bitch is ill there is a great danger that the puppies will introduce infection to your bitch and her puppy. I think they may be better hand reared or at least find a dam without any surviving pups of her own. Have you tried the local vets?
That is a very good point from Isabel, what is wrong with the bitch? check first.
A breeder friend of mine once took on two surrogate pups, her bitch did accept them, but there was only a few days between the litters, and they were integrated quickly, it depends greatly on the bitch though and she did have 5 pups of her own.
I think 5 new born pups is too many for your bitch to take on with such an age difference to her own, her milk flow will have settled in to feed just one pup, there won't be enough for days to feed 6 pups, if anything you will be deprieving your own pup of a decent feed and putting it in danger.
I think with 10 days difference I would hand rear, it is extremely hard work every 2 hours, get plenty of whelpi or whatever brand of milk substitute you need. If you can't get any right now, make up a blend of a cup of luke warm goats milk with 2 egg yolks as a substitue milk, you will need a syringe or eye dropper to feed the pups, if you can't get them to take a bottle.
If the pups are healthy after checking on what is wrong with the mum, introduce one pup at a time to your bitch with 2 days in-between each pup to help your bitch slowly build up her milk supply to accomodate the pups if she will accept them. Continue to hand rear until all are integrated, rub the whelping bedding on the pups to put a scent on them too.
If you need any other help come back, I am pulling for you and the pups but the hand rearing is the best way to go for now.
Good luck.

Have to agree with the others. Hand rearing is the way to go. If you want any help with hand rearing, just shout.
sorry also forgot to say when my lab had her litter last year she wasnt happy with the pups after having a c section and through the advice of our vets we started weaning them at 2 weeks

Back in August I had 2 litters very close together and one of the mums was very sick and I had to hand rear. I did try to add the pups in with the other litter but even though the mums of the litters were mother and daughter, the daughter refused them and would either bolt from the box or snap at the pups.
I hand reared the litter on skinners puppy milk and they all did very well, although I was like a zombie, feeding every 2 hrs. Some feeds you just finish the last pup and the first is up again. I also do not limit the milk to weight of puppy I just make up the bottles and let them have what they want!!!
My first ever litter was hand reared as mum lost her milk, not a great introduction to breeding!!! It is very rewarding but I think makes it even harder to say goodbye to them at 8 wks.
Good luck to your friend with her pups. You will find if you let friends know you are bottle feeding pups they will all turn up to help, most can't resist. Meaning you are only on your own at night with them. My house was always full of people fighting over bottles to feed the babies.
