Hi
Can anyone recommend a good harsh coat shampoo to show off a particolour coat (white with black patches) I have a new pup who just loves a dip in the pond.
thanks
Angela
I'm using a product by Osmond's (Groomers Choice) called Lavender Oil. It gets the coats really clean and bright looking. A friend uses a different shampoo, by the same company, as her dogs are whiter than mine. Mine are quite dark. Try their site www.osmonds.co.uk and see if they have anything suitable. It was trial and error for me, though. I tried lots of different shampoos before I found this one. :)

I use an Apple shampoo from the Animal Health Co on the Border terriers I handstrip (not on the same day as the handstrip of course) but I don't know about a black & white harsh coat. I'm afraid.
While talking harsh coats though, I just handstripped a Westie and they want me to give him monthly baths inbetween - would the harsh coat shampoo be better than the 'white coat' shampoo I have? I don't want to risk turning his coat soft as it's lovely to strip at the moment.

If you are looking for a harsh shampoo for white there aint nothing better than vetzyme JDS insecticidal shampoo, it certainly doesnt soften the coat in fact I dont use it unless for a show because it would dry the coat out too much so for in between washes I use a conditioning one, I have tried many shampoos over the years and nothing gets the whites cleaner that JDS.

Hi, i was always told to use a black shampoo on a white coat and a whitening shampoo on a black coat as it makes it even more shiny and it does work!
just make sure the black dosent contain dye

I might try that. It's more a case of do I try to keep it harsh or make it whiter though. I think I'll go with the harsh shampoo as he is so nice to handstrip. :-)

Having tried a black shampoo on a light grey and got a dirty looking grey :( personally I'd use a brightening shampoo, but you could always use a brightening shampoo and alternate with a harsh coat shampoo which is what I do, the brightener keeps the coat from going dingy looking and the other doesn't soften the coat. The one I use is Groomers for wire-haired terriers but Shaws was good too :D :D I have been known to mix them when diluting with good results :D

I have a black and white dog and always use Plush Puppy's herbal whitening on both colours with great results. Can't comment on how good it is on a harsh coat though.

Fido's black gloss conditioning shampoo - I've used this on a black & white dog and not only did his coat look lovely, he smelt wonderful for days after!

Trouble is, the coat conditioners actually soften a hard coat too :( :( this is why Harsh/Wire coat shampoos are used on terriers, if they have a correct coat it won't spoil it ;)

I like that idea Dill, they want me to bath the dog every month, so I can do him with harsh shampoo, then whitening next time, then harsh again the month before the next handstrip. Thanks!

Thanks,
Will try as you suggest alternating brightening with harsh coat, I try not to bath too often though at the minute his frequent dips in the pond are counteracting my good intentions:rolleyes:.

Vetzeme JDS insecticidal shampoo - its excellent, i have used it on my white poodles for nearly 30 years (its not cheap tho! bout £35-£40 for 4 litres) nothing brings them up whiter and have tried many others but nothing comes up to scratch like it, poodles coats are supposed to be harsh and unlike many others it doesnt soften the coat at all, although it is very drying on the coat so I only use it for going to shows i use a conditioning shampoo for maintenance baths between shows. I put about and inch in the bottom of a litre mixing bottle then mix in a very small amount of fairy liquid (it has to be the original fairy) then dilute to the top with warm water. Two washes with this and you will have a harsh sparkling white coat :D :D Funny thing is many people over the years have commented on how sparkling white my dogs are at shows and ask what I wash them with but when I tell them what shampoo I use they screw up their faces and say oh we don't use that

Just checked it out and I'll have to roll my eyes too  I can't use permethrins on my dogs - they're allergic to it

One actually collapsed, but recovered when I washed the powder off and gave piriton. It had only been 5 mins

so I won't be risking it ;) on vet's advice I avoid permethrins like the plague ;)
