has anyone tried this with their dogs succesfully? my vet said you have the jab 3 months after season then another in 4 months then 5 months then 6 months later and then every 6 months after that. has anyone heard of this? i have heard stories of the injection messing up a bitches cycle when someone wanted to breed later but i dont want to breed later. i am just terrified of the thought of having her spayed! can this injection change the temperament? i have heard spaying can
thanks

Spaying won't change her temperament if you wait until she is fully mature. The injections can cause pyometra, especially if used long term, I would personally never, ever use them. Far safer to spay! :)

I've used the injection before with two bitches and never had a problem. Once I used it as my bitch came in season the day before my dog was due to be neutered and I didn't want him being sore and upset. The other time I used it was when another bitch came in a month early and just as we were about to go on holiday, she would have to left behind as couldn't have her sharing a van with two entire dogs. In this sort of emergency situation I've found it very useful but I certainly wouldn't recommend using it instead of getting your bitch neutered. That said I know a couple of people with coated breeds who use the jag continuously to avoid altering their bitches coats. I didn't find it changed my bitches temprements, or stopped one going on to have a litter next season. The other bitch came in season on time after her jag, was mated but missed - I discovered later though that my boy had testicular cancer so this was probably why.

Please don't go down this route, I had a rescue who was given this injection & died because of it(the company paid all her medical fees & admitted liablitiy)

She couldn't be spayed for a medical reason unrelated to her death, afterwards I found that there were an awful lot of other bitches who died in exactly the same way as my bitch did

i saw my vet who said he has never heard of a bitch dying as its only a hormone injection. i have decided to have her spayed but the vet said she is too fat! so now we have to diet- wait for the next season and have the jab so we dont get a phantom and then spay her when she is thinner-he reckons 5 months to lose the weight! she doesnt even look fat to me!!! so either way i have to let her have the injection once and then go through being spayed.

But it can & has caused reactions in bitches & any long term use can as in my bitches case cause her death, why would the company that produced it have paid for my bitches treatment & admit liability if it wasn't their fault ?
- By sara1bee [gb] Date 08.02.07 06:29 UTC
but that makes it sound as if your bitch had a faulty batch? was that the case?
- By Moonmaiden Date 08.02.07 08:29 UTC
No, the reaction was caused by a "system"overload of hormone to put it in layman's terms & I know our vets will no longer use it for long term use

I use it on Pepsi, I usually have her jabbed one season and then let her have the next one as normal, she was very very poorly under her last general anesthetic so don't want to put her through another if I can help it. She is in season now as normal and I will have her jabbed about July time then she will not have another season befor Feb/March next year, it keeps the upheaval down a bit. With three bitches I find it helps out a bit. Pepsi has been fine so far and seems to suffer no ill effects, I think just using it every other season gives her system a chance to recover in between. Only my expierience though obviously others have not fared quite so well, Moonmaiden, seems like you drew a short straw with it?

My vet is against it, on the grounds that the injection itself stings, and can cause considerable distress to the dog.

I think the various stages of procreation can make them go ouch too :)

Pepsi never turns a hair so she obviously is numb from the neck down...something we are not entirely surprised at!!!! The only thing that makes her jump is when she lets go a particularly foul smelling f**t and then she runs a mile!!!

My two bitches, a border collie and a borzoi so both quite sensitive breeds never bothered at all with the jag Jo - it seems strange that your vet would not use it for that reason, not that I'm doubting you, just thinking about it :)

Now being microchipped must reallllyyy hurt as all my dogs have cried - and I hate to look at the needle too :(
- By Goldmali Date 09.02.07 14:58 UTC
I don't think microchipping DOES hurt unless you happen to be unlucky and hit a nerve or something. :) Some dogs hate having their scruffs pinched though -my Cavalier and Papllon scream if you do without doing anything else. The way I had it explained to me was that the needle is made so sharp it goes through really easily. I can attest to that because last summer I managed to microchip my thumb LOL! Believe it or not, I got the needle right in and I never felt anything at all, just wondered where all the blood was coming from!

I have known people use Overid (?) tablets before for a long term solution & still managed to have healthy litters later on.

I wouldn't do it though as I don't htink hormones should be messed with too much......unless it's me & they should all be removed
