how big is her breed? I use a childs inflatable paddling pool! have used one for 4 litters, 2 lots were springer spaniels and 2 were scotties. cheap to buy and easy to clean.

I suppose if she's only going to have one litter thats probably quite sensible isn't it? There's no point storing something you're never going to use again, and it may be difficult to resell - lets give her the benefit of the doubt :)

Can't offer any real help though as I've never used one - but I'm sure I've read good reports about them before on here so hopefully someone will be along soon with first hand information.

i have used a disposable for a large breed (gsd) and must say wasnt impresed(sp). The puppies could get out of the box from about 3 weeks so i put an extra piece of cardboard in to make front higher and my bitch didnt like it so she ripped out the front of the box.
so i brought a freedom playpen express delivery.

Have spoken to her and showed her the threads, thanks all for your advice. She has a lab bitch. Would lend her my whelping box but have a litter due at the end of the month myself.

Thank you all again.

I'm using a disposable whelping box at the moment for a litter of 7 (we had  8 but lost one). The only thing I would say is if she is going to whelp her bitch in it, tape some old newspaper/wallpaper to the insides. I didn't and the sides were dirty from day one from the whelping.....not very hygenic because you can't wash the sides. It comes with a cardboard tray which is waterproof to an extent but I would get a piece of lino to fit in the bottom instead. I got a medium one which is for a Cocker but I personally feel it's too small. A large one would have been better suited and my bitch is fairly small for the breed. I was going to throw mine away at 3 weeks but decided to put it in my Croft Freedom playpen for a bit of extra security for the pups. The medium size one fits inside the tray of the playpen perfectly with space to spare at the side and I have another tray on the front with extra panels.

I have a Snowsilk whelping box, a big one, suitable for labs etc. even though I have cockers!  It's great, when I've finished with it, I take it apart, pressure wash it and pack it flat so it doesn't take up much space, plus it's easy to keep clean when I do have a litter.

I too have the snowsilk box, the x large one for a rotti although Lottie refused to go in there once her pups were in there. Born for the showring definately not a mother!!!

The labs have always had plenty of space and can order new panels if needed. I have enough pieces to make a run on the front once the pups are 3 wks old. Easy to clean and well worth the money.

I struggled to effectively clean my Snowsilk because of the groves and openings at the ends which seemed to gather kack.  Without a pressure washer I didn't find it easy to clean after I had finished with it either, soaking in a bath of disinfectant was the best I could come up with.  I'm not sure that I would particularly recommend it and I think in a lot of ways a disposable one has considerable appeal and not just for pennypinching reasons :)  The only issue is whether they are tough enough for the job.

I have previously used a disposable box - if you intend only to have 1 litter then they are great value.  I had success with mine - managed to get 2 litters from 1 box with a goldie - although 2 very small litter - 3 & 2.

I have a Snowsilk which I bought from a friend who had stopped breeding. Haven't used it yet, still waiting for Ellie to come in season!!!!

I notice on a certain auction site that someone is selling Whelping boxes that look mighty similar to the Snowsilk ones. They appear to be made from exactly the same materials, think they are about £150 and completely reusable. My disposable one was about £50 and that was with 2 pieces of Vet bed made to measure. The small and medium ones come with a lid but I didn't use it as I found my bitch couldn't get through the opening properly with the lid on, I also couldn't see what was going on in the box in the middle of the night and had to keep taking it off  so it got binned! Don't get me wrong I would LOVE a Snowsilk one but couldn't justify the cost as I don't breed very often, plus storage is an issue.

I had a didposable one for my litter of 7 last year but at 5 weeks had to get rid of it as it was very dirty, although saying that I would purchase another next year.

 Thank you all for your advice. My friend has gone ahead and ordered one that she found on e-bay.
