my other spaniel bitch is due to have her first litter in 9 days but unlike my other dogs at this stage has developed hard swollen teats and glands. I have had  one who had one litter who had lots milk before the event and swollen etc but wasn't hard like this ones. my other spaniel doesn't really have much going on at all before pups come.
2 thoughts.. one is mastitus.. is that possible before pups come?  and other is  like when a person is breastfeeding, on the 3rd day when milk comes in, everything is rock hard and swollen for a day and then it begins to settle down. could this be the situation also?
will take her to the vet when it opens in the morning .Her temperature is 101 so not overly raised.I know about 101.5 is normal for her but during hthese last stages, temperatures  start drop to about 100 anyway don't they, before it goes lower just before whelp?
any of you had this before pre whelp please? thanks

yes i was concerned, hence the message. as i said i rang the vet on sunday and without an appointment this morning just drove to the surgery on opening time and she was looked at. vet said enormously engorged milk supply with milk leaking from some teats, but which looked every healthy and it didn't look like mastitis just very engorged but thankfully the vet did what i had hoped and prescribed synulox anyway just in case, anyhting is going on behind the scenes that can't be seen at this stage.

glad you got her there always best to be on the safe side
