Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blood tests before spaying
- By skyblue22 [gb] Date 05.02.07 10:05 UTC
Hi All,
I've read a post on this subject, but can't find it now I need it!

Does anyone know where it is, or if not, which blood tests are advised before spaying?
Many thanks,
Barbara

As far as I know, a routine blood test for liver function etc, can be done before any surgery involving a GA. I'm not aware of a particular test for spaying - is it to ascertain hormone levels?

Hi Barbara - I had my vets run a full blood panel before having my girl spayed over the summer. If you want this done then you might have to give them a little warning as not all surgeries can analyse the results and the blood may need to be taken the day before.

JG - I am assuming Barbara is talking about the blood test you mentioned, though it isn't routine to have it done around here  I had the panel run so they could see if there was any problems which could possibly cause complications whilst under GA :)

It's routine in that vets have to offer it to the client, but it's optional. :)

Thankyou both for your replies - I just remember reading a post where people were talking about blood tests before spaying, can't remember what they were for...but a general blood test sounds like a good idea.
Years ago I knew someone whose puppy died while being spayed because no one know she was a haemophiliac...
PS JG I've asked a couple of vets about spaying, and none have mentioned blood tests; you must have a v good vet.

Some vets only offer the tests for mature and senior animals; others offer them to all - the option is on the consent form which the vet talks through with the owner. Both my local vet practices offer them routinely. :) Ask your vet about them - there shouldn't be a problem. I'd expect to pay an extra £30 or so.
