My hubby asked on an allotment forum if anyone knew how to neutralise dog wee. We have no grass left cos it is such a tiny spot
Someone said that if we gave Tansy a teaspoon of tomato ketchup once a day, it neutralises the wee. I haven't heard of this before, and wondered if anyone on here has tried this, and knows if it works? I am not even sure that giving her tomato ketchup is very good for her!!

I've never heard that!  I do know people use ketchup to get rid of fox poo smell and it's supposed to be good for that - personally I prefer the foxy stink :D

I did read that if you water down the spot she'd weed on within an hour of her doing it you can minimalise or even completely avoid damage to the grass - but any longer and the damage will be done, more with more time.  Watering is totally ineffective after 24 hours apparently.

I don't know if there is anything to neutralise the wee - I wouldn't have thought so, but someone here may know of something!

Don't mess about trying to alter the acidity of the urine - that's a very quick way to causing serious urinary problems. Healthy urine is the acidity it is for the dog's health.

there is a product from Australia called dog rocks, they are available here in the Uk. not sure if I can mention the website ???? but if you google dog rocks and click on the "no dog rocks" one and have a look. They do not alter the ph in the dogs urine.
Not tried them personally but intend too when we move in a few weeks as our present garden is slabbed and the new one is grassed

Someone told me tomato puree has the same effect but have never tried it. I personally think that the brown patches on the lawn look very "designer" - anyone can have a perfect green lawn but it takes precision to have one with a patterned, two tone effect. :D

Especially as, if left alone, the grass usually grows back greener than before!

I think we will have to go for the 'replace turf once a year' option. :-) Thankfully it is only a very small area. It wont grow back though lol....its gone I won't be feeding her tomato ketchup...I had a feeling it couldn't be good! Thanks for your input.

Not an option that will make things look better I am afraid :(
As established grass stands up to urine 100 times better than new grass. We have put turf down(Its about a year old grass when it is cut for you to lay) and urine kills it very quickly, it hasnt got the strength to bounce back. You are much better, either, fencing off the grass area in the winter, or slabbing it!!!!
My lawn looks really bad, but in the spring I will spike and feed it and resow the areas that are really bad, and hope for the best :d
