hi all i own a three year old black lab he's not from a back yard breeder but he has ccl disease in both stifle's and he sprained one of them for the second time three week's ago we are just waiting for it to break now any help please is there light at the end of the tunnel

what is it i will be nice as i've just joined i could call it lot's of bad name's but it's cranial cruciate ligament disease

So couldn't you have the cruciate ligament removed and surgery(TPLO?) performed to be rid of the problem?

vet will not do anything till it break's as max's can't take any antinflammatory drug's  or any painkiller the vet has given him

Well I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel :( we are in a similar position to you at the moment and getting fed up after having done 2 months of cage rest

Would hydrotherapy help?

I know it helps to re-build muscle after injury or in the case of H/D or patella problems, and also after some surgery, so it might be worth asking the vet?

we have done the swimming max just forget's he has back leg's and think's the front one work just as well but thank's:rolleyes:

Did the hydrotherapists try to make him work his back legs?  I did a placement at a centre back in November, quite a few dogs were lazy with the hind legs so the therapists had to hold their feet very gently to get them to kick.  Did the trick, and I'd say about half the dogs I saw had cruciate ligament injuries, and were healing well - one greyhound had ripped both of his completely but was fully mobile from the swimming.  He was a lazy one too - he'd just float if they didn't get him to work.

This is what we did with Izzy on Wednesday, and now she is back to being lame I think he made her do too much, I'm taking her back to the Vets on Monday and I am waiting for a call from the specialist 'cos I don't know what to do/try next :(

hi give izzy a hug from max and i just to let you know him with three good leg's has now got ear infection
he can't do thing's by half he's the only dog i know so far that can sit and go back at the same time and bum stay's on the floor it's only when you have the ear drop's in your hand lol bless him

hi thank look's like we are at the start of a long road what do you think of TPLO i think we will have that done when it goes the vet's can do surgery key hole so less pain for max this is going to sound bad but i want it to go so we can just get it over with it's like liveing with a time bomb and good luck with your dog it's so hard

No.....I don't think it sounds bad at all, you just want to get it over with and recover, I'm sat here thinking exactly the same :(  We had keyhole surgery 3 weeks ago today, she's not supposed to be lame, I've been taking her to hydro and doing the short lead walks and keeping her crated so she doesn't undo what we are trying to achieve :rolleyes: But it just doesn't seem to be working, I'm waiting to speak to the specialist again, he was supposed to ring me back tonight, looks like I'll have to remind them on monday. She is the same.....thinks her back legs are there for looks :D not exercise :rolleyes: and now she is lame :( and i'm totally "hacked" off!

Just to add, I wish he'd done the tplo to start with, it's meant to be very good with a good success rate, thank goodness for insurance, bill is up to £1400 and rising :rolleyes:

£1400, is just for the cruciate ligament so far, i think it's another £2000 + for TPLO surgery.

thank you you are all so kind  as you know i'm very new to all this and it's good to know your not on your own the vet is doing acupuncture on max it is helping him but boy he is not likeing it much and treing to keep a 40kg lab standing when he want's to sit down is not fun i need it on my back now maybe she can do us both when we go next week
