Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Feeding chicken wings
- By Cindyloos Mum [gb] Date 24.01.07 19:38 UTC
I have bought some chicken wings today for my dogs 2 cavalier king charles spaniels.  I would like some advice on feeding them as I have never done this before one dog is about average size but my bitch is about the size of a large cat should I give her the chicken wings whole or smash them up?  I am a little nervouse about this as I have never fed any of my dogs raw meat before and am worried about them choking. Also does anyone know if you can feed chicken wings to cats?

my cats have eaten chicken wings. to make you feel better just hold the end of the chicken wing and let them knore (sp?) on the other. They will love you for it.
I have never bashed them and my cats dealt fine with them as well as my dogs

Hi Supervizla

Never thought to try my cat on the wings. Was terrified when I started feeding them to my dogs. We have never looked back. Will try Lilac Lil (Lily) the cat on one tomorrow. She (cat) seems to have a very delicate tummy. I had her from a breeder of British Short Haired cats & she advised me to feed her nothing but James Well Beloved Ocean Fish - dried food. I think she suffers much the same as Zak (GSD) from an intollerance to too much cereal in her diet. Most dried cat foods are mch like dog foods, they contain too much cereal/grain, I don't think it's natural. I know I was advised to feed Zak on wings etc. to firm his poos up a bit. It certainly has worked, so I don't see any reason why the same pricipal shouldn't work with the cat!

I can understand you feeling nervous if you haven't fed chicken wings before, I did too and I used to mince them, but after all the advice I was given I started to feed them whole by holding them but this seemed to make Jasper gobble them up quickly  so now we just put them in his bowl and he crunches them quite well!

I know Ian Billinghurst advises to feed cats raw food in his 'give your dog a bone' book!

Just tried my male dog with one he stared at it and sniffed for about ten minutes then the kitten ran in took it off him ran round the kitchen with it so I had to tackle her to get it back gave it back to Milo who eventually chewew it up much to the disgust of Cindy as I am still to worried to give her one.  Yes i know I am a coward:rolleyes:

See my post from a few days ago (titled: I'm a wimp!) I had all the same worries! My little fluffy bichon boys have just this second finished their chicken wings, been giving them for just a few days. They have had NO problems whatsoever and love them! As you will read I fully expected my little darlings to choke and drop dead, but nope not so much as a splutter! :)
I'm a convert!!! :D :D

i was worried when i first fed wings, but believe me im glad i did, my dogs nearly do somersaults when the packet comes out, and as to yet no more teeth cleaning!!. i do feed wholemeal biscuit & tripe and they also get plenty of raw marrow bones.

Do you feed your wings frozen?
- By Dogz Date 25.01.07 14:54 UTC
Both..

Go for it, you won't regret.  I was scared too the first couple of times.  But now my dog is fed a raw diet since months and she gets all sorts of bones.  Lamb, oxtail, pork ribs, chicken portions.   When she was a pup I used to give her raw hide at times (when I didn't know better.  No raw hide anymore in my house since months now) and quite a few times she chocked on it - what frights she gave us.  Raw bones are much safer.

I have just started giving my dogs chicken wings this week...they love them! And every other raw meaty bone they can get hold of! The youngest is 5 months (mastiff breed) and is better at eating them than the older dogs! I give them frozen if i havent taken them out in time to defrost.

I bet they would love a whole chicken

I have occasionally given my dogs raw chicken wings - which they love.  I have been put off doing it recently as my eldest bitch - 11 years - was sick during the night and a large piece of bone was in it.  For my puppy, I used to 'wack' them a few times with a meat cleaver to break the bones up so it was easier for her to eat.  I must say, they do love them and would like to go onto a more raw food type diet for them all but after this recent experience, I have been put off.  Do you have to be more careful with the chicken wings when the bitch may be in whelp?

I feed both my BCs chicken wings and have done for quite a while now. I have noticed a huge improvement in their teeth, so much cleaner. I tried fragaria and plaque off, but the wings do a brilliant job.
I also feed raw chicken/tripe mince.
I haven't had any problems, i was a little concerned trying with my younger dog as she was prone to becoming very loose if i tried anything out of the ordinary, but if anything its made her much firmer. She also continued during her pregnancy and her pups left having a taste for them.

Hi today i braced my self and gave my gsd chicken wings they were out on the work top thawing and she got 2 of them she gobbled them down in minutes she frightened me to death i have now put the others back in the fridge, my poor collies were gutted because their mum is such a wimp but i will pick up the courage  tomorrow to try them. Is it a normal procedure for our canine companion to treat chicken wings like this as i am still amazed .
- By Annie ns Date 02.02.07 22:13 UTC
It's probably a good idea to keep the other dogs at a distance so whichever dog has the wings, they don't gobble them down in case one of the others pinches them! :)  Ideally, the wings should be chewed, not just swallowed.  If they are swallowed with little or no chewing, dogs will often bring them back up and eat them again  so be prepared for that. :)
- By bagpipe [gb] Date 02.02.07 22:29 UTC
I buy chicken portions from Farmfoods, they are bigger, meatier and cheaper then wings.  If your dog doesn't really chew them, you can hold on to one end - but watch your fingers:cool:

Yep i agree.Cant beat reeeaaal food, and i bet dogs who are fed nothing but dry food crave it so badly.... :(
- By MariaC [gb] Date 02.02.07 22:43 UTC
Yes it is normal for dogs to gobble the wings initially - I understand why you were so frightened.

Don't worry, if you give them to your dog and she knows they are for her (and no one is going to take them away from her) I don't think she will try to eat them so quckly - our dog used to try to swallow them if we were holding them as soon as we started to place them in his bowl he decided to crunch them!

Maybe if you have more than one dog it would be best to feed each dog the wings seperately at the beginning?   That way they won't have to gobble them up for fear of the others taking them!
- By katja [gb] Date 02.02.07 23:08 UTC
It has been known for our shepherd to virtually inhale her food(lol), So we do feed them apart she seems to be doing ok she keeps looking at the fridge in hope. Thanks for the recipes maria i am going to give them ago tomorrow oH said not to invite my dad over in case he thinks he is stopping for dinner:eek:
- By flora2 [gb] Date 03.02.07 19:36 UTC
After weeks of trying to buy them, finally saw them in the supermarket. GSD sniffed and wouldn't touch but JRT and cat really enjoyed them!
- By stann [gb] Date 04.02.07 11:41 UTC
I gave my two chicken wings yesterday, one was fine and the other threw it all up, the bones wern't crunched enough. I am now wondering whether to give them again or not.
- By Annie ns Date 04.02.07 12:25 UTC
Stann,  This is quite common when the dog doesn't chew the bones enough.  Normally they just eat them again, a bit slower!  If the dog that swallowed the bones did so because the other dog was nearby, try feeding them further apart.

Agree with Annie_ns here - one of my boys was exactly the same - ate it whole!  But after a few goes got the hang of it and now munches on carcusses and whole breasts too!
- By velmabell Date 04.02.07 13:48 UTC
Does anyone have any experience of feeding whole chickens to dogs?

Now have my own chooks and trying to rear some for the pot - but as a modern woman, and only feeding myself and my OH I really only intend to cut off the breasts (easiest to cook and eat in my opinion and saves any question of plucking and drawing etc) and wondered whether I could give the rest of the raw carcass to my lab as don't want to waste it?
- By zarah Date 04.02.07 18:36 UTC
My Dobe has them whole - takes him all of about 30 seconds! :D
- By Harley Date 04.02.07 19:31 UTC
Yep - practically a whole chicken would be welcomed with great enthusiam by our GR.
- By rachelsetters Date 04.02.07 19:41 UTC
One of my boys tacked carcusses no problemo at all!  but the other three took a bit longer to get the hang of so used to just cut in half !  Now though all manage no problem just a bit slower than my greediest :)
