Just a quickie - can anyone confirm for definite that pet passports are not needed when travelling to and from Eire?

Definitely not needed to and from UK. I sold a pup to Eire last summer.

Does anyone know what the rules are for dogs entering Ireland from abroad?  do they have to come through the UK, or does Ireland have it's on Pet Passport rules and are they different to ours, and if they are how does that square with the dogs in theory then being able to freely come to UK from Ireland?

There's info about that here. It seems as though the Irish system is the same as the UK system, which means animals can still travel freely between the two countries.

Eire is in the EU & the PP rules are the same as the UK

Yip that is correct but you don't need the PP to move from country to country within the British Isles where you do when you go over to Europe.
