Topic Dog Boards / General / Just Had Vet On the Phone. Bad News
- By bevb [gb] Date 30.01.07 18:59 UTC
Just got off the phone from the vet and its not good news Milo has raised eosinophils in his blood, which basically means he has what I lost my last two dogs to, auto immune disease.
We are going to give him a 2 week course of antibiotics as slight infection is also showing up, vet is not hopeful it will make much difference but worth a try. Neither of us are keen to go down the steroids route, but vet is going to get notes from my previous vet on my last two dogs and do some research himself, but he said so far he hasn't come up with any more than I have told him on it.
He is going to research new treatments for it also.
He said once he has finished his antibiotics he will do another blood test and send it off and see whether it is the same, improved or worse.
I was very pleased though that he is in total agreement with me about vaccination and this disease and said he is to have no more vaccinations especially the lepto one.
I am just praying my other dog Shady is ok and he said we should blood test her at some point too, to check.
I really am gutted and very emotional right now, what the hell is going on. Its got to be vaccination or my soil, I deep down think its vaccination as a side effect of this disease can be, obsession with eating dirt.
If it is vaccination then I feel it is almost certainly the Lepto one as thats the only booster Milo has recieved. I tell you I will never ever again have a lepto jab done on any dog I have.
Poor Milo this is so unfair for him, he is so sweet and just doesn't deserve this at all.
One thing I am sure of though is that I will never let my little lad suffer like my other two did as soon as he starts going down hill and showing signs of being unhappy I will call it a day for him.
I can't stop crying, I love my boy and just want him to have what he deserves a long happy healthy life.

Oh Bev I am so sorry :(, my thoughts are with you.

I so sorry it does not seem to be going so well at the moment.  The possibility of three dogs in one household being so affected because of vaccination seems such a long shot to me when most people go a lifetime never coming across it.  That is not to say vaccination could not be an aggravation but the probabilities of it being the route cause must be very remote.  I really think you need to investigage your environment perhaps even for your own security.

Just a thought - I was wondering if you live in an area that is affected by radon gas which can cause cancer related illnesses. The following website may be of use to you

http://www.radon.co.uk/what_is_radon.htm
There is a fair bit of information on the internet about this type of gas but I am not very good at doing links so this is one to start with and you could do a search for some more info. Certainly something to check into.

I am so sorry that your dogs have had the same health problems and hope Milo regains his health.

i have lost five dogs to cancer all under the under of 8 from 5 to 8 years old all living in the same house over the years of10 years.

we thought of doing this test but once you have done the test weather it clear  or not when it come to sell the house you got to tell the buyer that you have test of this,so we didnt go down that route just incase we sell later.

with me it was 4 flatcoats 1 gordon setter 2 pairs of them die with 10 day of each other.i do know that fcr have a high of cancer in the breed and the avage age is 8 1/2 .so you may call it bad luck as well.

all the best with milo

I'm so sorry about your Milo. I would definitely look into your environment for your own safety. Three dogs with the same disease is just too much to be coincidence. I hope you find a way to help your beloved little boy. Big hugs from me and my Milo.

So very sorry to hear about all your dogs, what an awful state of affairs. I just wondered how long you have lived where you are, and also wonder if the people who lived there before you had dogs, and if they had any problems? perhaps your neighbours could tell you? Does anyone else that lives local to you with dogs, or walk on ground near you, experience any problems with their dogs health? Just thinking that, if its an enviroment thing, others must have been affected too. Maybe its something your vet could check up on with other vets in the area, if confidentiality to clients is not compromised. If not, then maybe it could well be the vaccinations. The enviroment officers at your local council offices should be able to tell you if you live in an area thought to be affected by Radon gasses. Certainly, when you sell a house, part of the searches will state if you live in an area so affected, and will advise having testing carried out, although they do state that, as it takes 3 months, it is usually to long a test to perform prior to selling/purchase. If you are affected by radon, there is something they put in the house, can't remember the full details now, that help deflect it, or something. It may be worth having some soil samples taken, and your water tested, see if that can show anything amiss. All these things the enviroment officer can help you with.
At least you have a wonderful vet, who does accept that vaccinations can cause problems, and is really supporting you at this difficult time. I really hope you manage to find something out, and your dog does not become worse. My heart goes out to you.

>The enviroment officers at your local council offices should be able to tell you if you live in an area thought to be affected by Radon gasses

I was thinking about that.  I would be very worried and would certainly want soil samples analysed.  Unless all the dogs affected were related it seems unlikely that vaccinations would cause this. Reactions to vaccinations are too few to have 3 unrelated dogs all affected in the same way, especially bearing in mind how they ate the soil.  Something in the soil seems to be attracting them and this is where I would be looking first.

The Council will be able to tell you what the land was used for before the houses were built.

This site might be helpful in determining whether your house is in a radon gas area, or landfill site, etc.

Truly sorry to hear this.

So sorry to hear about Milo, Bev you must be out of your mind with worry :(
Your vet seems excellent, and I think it's good that he also suggested having Shady tested too !

I'm keeping everything crossed for you all and special big hugs to Milo x
