Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Non Raw Feeders
- By Blossom [gb] Date 27.01.07 22:38 UTC
Hi all

Out of pure curiosity I wondered what those of you that don't feed a raw diet feed their dogs?

I do a mixture of both.  I use Purina Pro Plan puppy and also feed the raw minced lamb/tripe/chicken/chicken and liver.

TIA

I feed Nutro or Autarky, I also supplement with Vit C, Evening Primrose Oil, or Star Flower Oil, Glucosamine and Zinc. All the best, Dawn

I feed Arden Grange and .... up until recently Natures Menu but Harvey is a little over weight so just AG at the moment.

Autarky and the occasional chicken wing or meaty bones.

I do Beta (what breeder recommended).  Did try Burns which was recommended by puppy class trainer, due to the lower protein levels but felt it really affected Misty's energy levels too much.  She also gets raw chicken wings every other day, raw egg maybe 2 times a week and raw mince whenever i use it for our dinner (not raw for us mind you ). She also gets lovely smelly sausages when we are training :D :D

Hi

Just making sure that you are aware that you should definitely freeze beef (and probably every other meat to be on the safe side) before feeding - I've never forgotten this thread here. I made the mistake myself of giving my Dobe fresh mince straight from the pack for several days in a row when he was just a teeny tiny pup! Ignore me if you already know about it anyway :P

Nothing helpful to add in reply to the original question as I feed all raw :D

zarah, I didn't know this.  My dog is fed kibble but I have given her little tasters of fresh raw mince when preparing our dinner.  I won't be doing that again.

To OP - my dog started off on a couple of different brands of kibble that didn't suit her and seemed to be linked to an undesirable behaviour (Coprophagia).  JWB seems to suit her very well and so that is what we've stuck with.

Timberwolf (black forest or ocean blue at the minute), and most days add in either raw Prize Choice mince, Natures Menu, raw chicken bones, or tuna in sunflower oil, also add veges and fruit, FBO, vit E, glucosamine, chondritin, MSM, and occasionally (twice a week) starflower oil, zinc, kelp, and at the moment CLO as its winter and there's a distinct lack of sunlight:mad: Used to cook everything (cooked pasta, rice, veg, meat every morning and gave them brown bread and a cheap complete food too) - saves alot of time chucking it in raw:cool: and think I was overdoing the carbs a bit!

Cheryl, you can always add a half teaspoon of garlic mixed in his/her food, this usually stops this lovely habit!! Bear in mind that onions are poisonous to dogs and garlic is related to the onion...however I have never ever had a problem with this and quite a lot of people give garlic to their dogs. All the best, Dawn

Thanks, but I've only seen her do it a couple of times since changing her food and that was well over 2 years ago.

How does feeding garlic work?  Is it the same principle as pineapple?  The reason I ask is that I can understand how this might stop a dog eating their own faeces but not other dogs'.

I would like to know more about the parasite in the fresh mince meat though.  Does this parasite turn up in other meat as well?  I have cut off the wings of fresh chicken and given them to my dog as a treat.  Should I freeze them first?

Ohh okay then, sorry!! It makes the faeces undesirable! so of course it doesn't stop them eating other dog mess...but strangely it seems a lot of the time it is their own mess they like eating?? All the best Dawn

Don't worry.    I used to have a habbit that if I bought meat and put it straight in the fridge, i generally forgot about it and it will then go out of date  so I always freeze mince and other meats as soon as I get home (had enough of OH going on about how much I used to waste! :p.  this also gives me more space in the fridge for more important things like coke and chocolate!!! ;) :D :D Mind you I don't freeze her chicken wings, I have always given it straight from the fridge?  maybe I should start freezing those as well?

Mine get Autarky adult and Butcher's meat, along with a few different supplements - some vitamins, fish oils and an enzyme/probiotic supplement to replace what's lost in high temp cooking of the kibble.

Mine are all fed on Arden Grange and have done really well on it.  Even my Akita who is the fussiest eater I have ever known will eat hers!

When I'm taking a break from raw feeding mine, I give them Forthglade menu with either biscuit and / or vegetables.  I'm not a fan of dried food any more - though occasionally I miss the ease of just putting a scoop into a sack!

I feed Nutro Choice (to Earl and to our cats) and they're all looking great on it.

Earl also ends up with the suitable left overs from our dinners, and I'm going to start giving him raw chicken wings as a treat.  He has cooked lung as his treat when he's training.

Beta. They have a chicken wing if we are having chicken but that is not very often because we only buy free range, although they do seem to be getting much more reasonably priced don't they?
No other suppliments except if an individual seems to need it, for instance my old dandie was on Green Lip Mussel extract but I suppose that is more like medication that nutrition :)

Once she was past the puppy stage (when she had Beta puppy) our ancient labrador, who was put down after suffering a stroke at 16 years was mainly fed kitchen scraps (toast crusts, potatoes in various staged of cooked-ness, plate scrapings, cooked veg (except brussels sprouts which would be sitting, licked spotless, at the bottom of the dish at the end) together with various combinations of cheap working dog food - usually the cheapest Dr John one!

Our current Lab also had beta puppy (although onto Junior in super quick time as she was far far too hyper on the higher protein puppy food to be bearable) but in an attempt to get her to cast less hair everywhere our lab now gets fed Burns, and whilst she gets kitchen scraps and horse-carrots etc I do not let her have anything with wheat or milk in it, including left over cheese sauce much to her disappointment!  She also gets an egg about once a week. So far I'm quite pleased with the effect - it might just be seasonal but she doesn't seem to be losing just as much hair as constantly as before, and i haven't seen her scratch in ages.

Whilst I believe that you can relieve or exacerbate some conditions and predispositions by what you feed, it will take some convincing to persuade me that the average basically healthy dog (well a labrador anyway) will live any longer if fed expensive food rather than something basic like Dr JOhns, provided that it is fed the correct quantity and not allowed to become fat and lazy!

I do think that I probably have an easy life with labradors though as mine have always seemed quite indestructable - the older one mentioned above broke into the garden shed when she was three and polished off a can of slug pellets but seemingly had no ill effects - and my current one stole an entire tin of quality street at xmas 05 which she ate wrappers and all and the only ill-effect seemed to be the sugar rush which seemed to put her into fast forward mode for about 3 days!
