I would like to know too ! Have bought a matte buster, but don't like to use it, as he is always wriggling!

Thanks for any help & we are going to take him to be groomed soon, but would like to know what to do in the meantime.

I find the vitapoint leave in conditioner is great to removed matts.  I put it on them a little baby talc and gentle ( very) comb it through.

you need to get the v shaped rake from http://www.championpets.co.uk/
and the detangler spray called amazing trix from www.dezynadog.co.uk

I have beardies so if you need any help pm me.

I agree I have also used manes and tails but very very sparingly as it is very oily but also very good :)

Can I ask how often you are wet bathing your pup? I have 2 afghans so am used to coats that matt, and I find the best way of getting a matt free coat is to regularly bathe the dog, and condition the coat with dilute conditioner, well rinsed out. Then put an afro comb through the coat, and finish with a blow dry. In affies, drying the hair straight, over a brush, discourages tangles. Now when I say "regularly" I mean I do mine about every 10 days, and when zorro was blowing his coat I had to do it every 5 days. I find dry brushing actually encourages matts in long coats.
Now if your little one is already matted I'd suggest a  coat recovery session....possibly cowboy magic, and really get every single matt out. You could always get this done professionally as a one off. Then develop a preventative routine like regular wet bathing/conditioning.  I find it lots easier to have frequent tangle free baths, than long detangling sessions!

Thank you everybody for your suggestions & I have to say I don't completely bathe him as often as every 10 days, but will start now. We had a beardie before, but can't remember her being matted so young.
Once again thank you & I will try your suggestions

Personally I wouldnt fully bathe a puppy every 10 days just damp down the coat and comb out the matts with a  v shaped matt remover from the site I gave you on my other post. If grooming a TT is the same as  my breed then you have to remove all of the matts before you bath puppy otherwise they clump together even more.

Thanks roni, i did think that every 10 days was a bit too frequent. We have to do his legs every time he goes out this weather & he isn't too keen on that!
- By STARRYEYES Date 22.01.07 18:17 UTC
know the feeling I've got three thats 12 legs in all after every walk ...very time consuming  they love splashing in the muddy water but hate dipping thier legs in a bowl of nice clean water <g>

Don't envy you Roni, you must go through stacks of towels!! mud is Coco's favourite & playing with other dogs in big puddles over the park!

Just a little tip re Beardies.  If you leave the muddy legs to dry the dirt will drop out, all over your carpet, and then you only need to give them a good brushing.  The nice thing about Beardies is that they are self cleaning, pity the floor isn't. I would not be washing their feet and legs all the time as white paws can go pink if kept continually wet.

TT's have a very different coat, it is much softer and very easily damaged.  I am new to TT's so I have asked questions of all the big breeders I meet to try and get a consensus of opinion and the main thing is never to brush a dirty coat.  Always wet the coat with a mister, if it is clean, before starting to groom and bath once a week brushing from the bottom, feet and legs, up to the spine taking small amounts of coat each time and getting right down to the skin.

Take heart Ginastarr, it will only be a few more months and he will have his glorious coat for you to show off - and sadly no matter how often you brush at this stage there will always be little knots, just got to stick with it.  A good tip is not to let him run around and rub against things when you bath him or when he is wet because the barbs on his undercoat will do their job and lock together forming a mat.  When you get him out of the bath pat him dry with a towel, never rub, and finish with a cool hairdryer.

Duddly is now near 6 months and his coat is profuse just like your boy, they have similar breeding don't they, and I find little knots every day even though I groom him every day.  He is such a wriggle bum I have a job to keep him in the flat position when grooming but Poppy is an angel and is really well behaved.

Its a boy thing!!!!!!!

Forgot to add.  Some people keep their TT's in oil.  I have tried Seabreeze oil from Plush Puppy and it was very useful for keeping Pip relatively knot free during the puppy blow but it does make the dog look like a Teddy boy.  Ive got used to the comments now and I don't care as long as it reduced the knots.

re- beardies I dont leave them wet as I have a blaster . :) My girls feet are not pink but I guess its because they are dried and feet/legs groomed .
- By echo [gb] Date 23.01.07 10:32 UTC
Exactly what I was getting at Roni.  If they are left continuously wet they do discolour, carefully dried - no problems - just pointing out being outdoor working dogs they do tend to just drop any dirt from the coat once it has dried and then a good brushing keeps it looking nice.

Guess I am from the old school.  I try not to make work if I can help it.  Certainly wasn't suggesting anyone's Beardies had pink feet and definitely not yours, they are gorgeous.

Hi Christine I do understand what you mean as Beth's toe went pink when she had a little op and began licking it - that did turn slightly pink !

Afraid I cant do with all the muck dropping off all over the house so prefer to take the time to clean them up but then I am home all day and have the time :)

Do you do house calls? the dog rooms always need brushing.  See you at Crufts, not long now!
- By STARRYEYES Date 23.01.07 15:47 UTC
Ahhh you see I dont have dog rooms!!<g>

Interesting reading about the TT coat good job its not the same rule for B having to wash the whole dog weekly{{{shiver}}}

echo.......Im glad that you too had been given advice to bath once a week as that is what i do with Keeper.  Im lucky tho, after his bath he just lies on the floor perfectly still with his soaking wet head on my lap and normally falls asleep (snoring) while i dry him.
- By DianeSolo [gb] Date 23.01.07 18:25 UTC
Just to say that we took Coco to the groomers today & he looks gorgeous! We will now try & keep him knot free, thanks to all the tips on here.

We have a Bichon and use Cowboy Magic detangler. Very good and has prevented many drastic "scissor jobs"
- By DianeSolo [gb] Date 25.01.07 22:20 UTC
Could you tell me where to purchase 'cowboy Magic' from  please, as would rather avoid a naked belly in future! Coco's not mine!!!!
- By lfc4eva [gb] Date 26.01.07 14:24 UTC

Here's another site
www.hubintsecured.co.uk/
search for Cowboy magic. Also any place that sells grooming supplies for horses will sell it, it is also used to detangle horses manes.
