I'm sorry its another question about castration. Sam is almost 3 and we have a 4 year old spayed bitch that at certain times he will not leave alone she is wet constantly with him licking around her neck area. At the moment he is wearing a buster collar as he has Scrotal eczema again so I suppose being castrated would solve this problem. He's cocked his leg in home a couple of times and I've just found more evidence of this on the dishwasher. I'd like to know if castration would solve these problems and how long would he take to recover as we are taking him on holiday in March so I don't want him to disgrace himself or us. Any advice gratefully received.

If he's 3 and already used to marking, this will not likely stop as it is habit. Indeed I have a neutered male who was done at 4½ MONTHS and he marks everywhere given half a chance.Licking your bitch around the neck I can't see will have any connection either. :) But scrotal excema, now there it could help of course if there's nothing left to lick.

His scrotum will still be there after castration, so if it gets eczema now it's likely to still get eczema then. But I agree, neck-licking and marking are likely to continue as before.

But it will be MUCH smaller JG as it shrinks and shrinks with time until you virtually can't see it at all -I just checked those of mine that's been done (one large crossbreed, one Cav, one Pap) and you can't see theirs at all. :) Also the CAUSE can have a lot to do with it. I remember at home in Sweden I could never tell my dogs "sit" in the winter as they'd freeze to the ground and the scrotum would start to peel skin afterwards and got very sore. If the cause is something sat on, there will be less of it sitting on it. :D

The scrotum's very elastic skin anyway, the way it stretches when the dog's warm and contracts when it's cold, to keep the testicles at the right temperature. It certainly contracts back after castration, but it's still there.

To answer the recovery part of your question - it doesn't take very long at all. My boys were both very sore on the actual day of their ops but by the next day were wanting to go out for walkies. They were running in the field the day after and by 5 days later were completely back to normal :)

i had mine done last october and the constant stop, start on walks has stopped. he now has one or two wee's and thats it, so it has stopped the marking.

oh, and he's nearly 3 yrs old.

if my dog was marking in the house then i wouldn't hesitate to castrate.

it wont stop the licking so you will have to out train him on this issue.
