Topic Dog Boards / General / dangerous dog act upgraded!

hi all
just read in the sunday paper that they are upgrading the dda.
This means that you can be procecuted anywhere where your dog may bite someone! What if someone breaks into my house at night? does this mean i will face procecution & my dog destroyed? Not that my dog would bite someone!!!

upgrading the dda they mention that other breeds will be added if deemed dangerous to humans!! Does this mean that rotties, dobes, gsd's,ebt's,sbt's bullmastiffs etc etc will be added? Due to the bad press These breeds have recieved at some point?

hi, what paper is this in?

That is very worrying - I know very well that if someone was to break into my house, they would get bitten, as Soli isn't socialised with strangers very well and Remy is very territorial.  I'm pretty sure Opi would put up a fearsome display though I don't think she'd bite.  I hope that the new DDA will take this situation into account - and not side with burglars as seems to happen far too often :(

For pity's sake! Doesn't this contradict the legislation that says it is unacceptable to keep dogs crated as it curbs their natural behaviour?  Can't remember the actual words now but it's on another thread.  What's more natural than a dog protecting it's territory.  My dog got a big hug and praise when she started barking at 5.30am 2 days ago.  My daughter was trying to sneak in quietly - ha ha busted :D

I wouldn't believe a word I read in a general newspaper, only the dog papers.

My dog bit someone who broke in about 3yrs ago.

We were told by the police he could take it to court but he would be unlikly to win, but we would of been told to keep the dog under controll:eek:

I would of loved to see the look on the blokes face after getting into the hallway & being confronted by 3 staffies:cool:

I think what happened was he saw the dogs & ran - one of the dogs insists on grabing your  ankles when you run & this was where he was bit. I dont think it was that bad, he ran away!!

But I think it is awfull when the poor dog is defending its territry & owners & gets into trouble for it.

Good point Goldmali, after all, we don't even know which paper this is in yet - still awaiting on the OP for that info, I have googled since, but haven't managed to find the article - and we don't know the credibility of the story.

The paper i saw the article in was the News of the World, OH decided to wake me up with the info this morning

From what I can see in the online edition all this amounts to an 'interview' with a 9yo bitten by rottweilers couched in language few if any nine year olds would use, and a News of the World 'campaign' against 'Devil Dogs'.

Yes it was The News of the World and I appreciate the comments that its not a credible newspaper but thought it still worthy to note.

The general public read this paper and many will form opinions from this which is what is frightening  especially in the litigious society in which we now live.

Hopefully the majority of dogs bark before they bite.  I know all mine make the most awful racket when the summer revels are on and people go along shouting and singing at the entrance to the cul-de-sac and I would hope this puts off would be burglars.

If any got in they would find themselves surrounded on several levels by barking herding dogs and smaller more tenacious temple dogs who would put the beans up anyone.  I doubt they would bite but part of the herding behaviour involves snapping at the bottoms of cattle (up at shoulder height on a human) and a false move toward them could result in a nip.

I am more than happy to let them bark at unaccustomed noises when they are inside the house, makes the miscreants think twice.
