I think I need one of those wave effect memory foam pillows. Can anyone recommend any? I'm not so keen on the ones on Ebay - they look a bit cheap.

Any recommendations?
- By CALI2 [gb] Date 22.08.06 08:06 UTC
I have the Dunlopillo Super Comfort foam pillows would highly recommend. They cost £40 each from sleepmasters.
I also have the memory foam mattress too, would also recommend.

They have these memory pillows at Dunelm mill they have 2 different types 1 is £24 and the other is £38
- By Rosemarie [gb] Date 22.08.06 08:59 UTC
My mother has a Tempur pillow which is supposedly very good though not cheap - she paid £80  though if you look online you will probably find it cheaper.
- By Dogz Date 22.08.06 09:08 UTC
Tempur, but if you could 'have a go' they take a couple of weeks to get used to for some people. You may not take to one.
- By CALI2 [gb] Date 22.08.06 09:44 UTC
It took me a couple of weeks to get used to it but now love it.
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 22.08.06 11:29 UTC
I started off with a 'memory foam style' pillow from Argos.  It didn't last that long so I saved up for a Tempur pillow and haven't looked back.  Coincidentally I've bought it in to work with me today as we had a long conversation about pillows and matresses and colleagues hadn't seen memory foam before.

It was costly - £65ish but it's worth it's weight in good nights sleep!  It did take me a few weeks to get used to it though.
- By Carla Date 22.08.06 11:39 UTC
Do they feel quite hard?
- By CALI2 [gb] Date 22.08.06 12:08 UTC
Yuo can get different firmness levels ie soft, medium and firm. The one I have is classed as firm but it is really supportive though without being too firm.
- By briedog [gb] Date 22.08.06 14:10 UTC
we got tempur pillows and now thing of get the bed next
- By ShaynLola Date 22.08.06 15:18 UTC
I bought one at the weekend. It was half price from Dunelm Mill so paid £17.50. I haven't had a good night's sleep since :( However, found out today that I've got it the wrong way around  D'OH!!!  Well, it's not my fault...it didn't come with instructions!!
- By Carla Date 22.08.06 15:27 UTC
LOL!!!
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 22.08.06 15:37 UTC
Tempur pillows only come in one weight.  They aren't hard, but firm, and very heavy.  If you phone them up or email them, you'll get a free sample of the foam.
- By Carla Date 22.08.06 17:49 UTC
OK, I bought a Tempur   I am £85 light. For a pillow. OMG *faints dead away* :D
- By Blue Date 23.08.06 07:20 UTC
Boy are they expensive. I need to look at my sleeping arrangements :-) the clean type.

It doesn't matter what side I sleep on, however I lie half my arm goes numb.   Bought a new bed which is better but still got the numb arms :-)
- By newfiedreams Date 13.01.07 17:07 UTC
It's not undiagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome is it? Otherwise I would seriously get the GP to send you for an X ray and then referral, depends on the results...for an MRI scan? I have just been diagnosed with a prolapsed disc in my neck and boy is it ever sore? I also wake up with numnb arms! All the best, Dawn X
- By ali-t [gb] Date 13.01.07 17:42 UTC
as well as carpal tunnel (which I was diagnosed with when my thyroid packed up) it could also be reynauds syndrome (sp?) which is more common in the winter and if your heating goes off during the night and you don't sleep with hands under pillow it could set it off.  Wth carpal tunnel it is likely to only be numb up to the wrist and you are likely to have an almost constant numbness or buzzing in your fingers, particularly the thumb adn the first 2 fingers. HTH
- By Dill [gb] Date 13.01.07 18:35 UTC
er,  I've had my Carpal tunnels done on both hands and before it was done my arms would be 'numb' to the elbows :(  also the middle two fingers were the worst affected, but wouldn't call it tingly, more numb and painful (pins and needles sensation) at the same time   Mind you, by the time I got them done I couldn't do buttons, earrings, needles and pins, kept dropping cutlery while trying to eat, had trouble with cups/mugs, the hoover, washing up.

Maybe I shouldn't have had them done - I'd have been like a Chinese Empress LOL
- By ali-t [gb] Date 14.01.07 10:54 UTC
Dill, I can only speak of my own experience and what I was told at the hospital.  Pain and experiences are subjective and perhaps what I experience as tingly you describe as numb and painful.  Pins and needles is an accurate description though so at least we agree on one thing.
- By ShaynLola Date 13.01.07 19:35 UTC

>however I lie half my arm goes numb.   Bought a new bed which is better but still got the numb arms :-)

>It's not undiagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome is it?

 This happens to me too.  I wake up several times a night with no feeling in my right arm no matter what position I sleep in.  My hand will also start to go dead when I'm carrying a shopping bag or something.  Think I'd better get myself to the doctor

BTW, now that I am accustomed to my memory foam pillow (and worked out which way around it goes  :D )  I love it! And I have hardly any back pain now whereas I used to wake up feeling like I'd been given a severe kicking during the night.  I don't think I could go back to ordainary pillows now :)
- By munkeemojo Date 22.08.06 17:21 UTC
definitely recommend them. We have some from sleepmasters-think they're the same an jennibasenji's. I too have the a foam mattress, although only a topped one-i couldn't get away with a full foam one. The pillows aren't hard-they're quite firm, but they almost melt when they warm with your body heat. Its quite weird, but in a nice way. I can't begin to describe how comfy they are though-especially when used with a foam mattress. I hate getting up on a morning now i have them.

Tut tut you can get them much cheaper than that!

Prepare to take a little while to get used to it - you will benefit in the end.
- By Carla Date 22.08.06 19:14 UTC
Not the same one though :)
- By ali-t [gb] Date 22.08.06 19:26 UTC
ASDA do a memory foam pillow which is great if you want to do it on the cheap.  It costs £20 and it is like disappearing into the bed - weird coz your head feels weightless like your neck isn't supporting it.  Love it!
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 25.08.06 12:14 UTC
Aren't they hot?  I'm at that age where I'm desperately trying to stay cool at night.  I've heard that memory foam stuff really, really heats up.
- By ali-t [gb] Date 25.08.06 20:22 UTC
they can get really hot as your head and neck get kind of enveloped in it. the ASDA one has a furry velvety cover on it which doesn't help.  the first night I slept on it, it reminded me of the scene in the film trainspotting when Ewan McGregor OD's and sinks into the floor -thats what it feels like
- By Goldmali Date 22.08.06 19:01 UTC
Okay. I officially am insane. When I started reading this thread I was CONVINCED it was pillows that somehow helped to improve your memory as you slept.............
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 22.08.06 19:27 UTC Edited 22.08.06 19:31 UTC
... awww, bless!

What a lovely idea tho!  Come on ChloeH, show us which one you've spent a fortune on.
- By Dogz Date 23.08.06 07:33 UTC
Well that's okay, who is to say that isn't the case? ;-)
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 23.08.06 08:05 UTC
I promise you it isn't!  My memory is as bad as the day the pillow arrived and I've used it for a minimum of 6hrs per day/night.

...never mind, still taking the pills!
- By Dogz Date 23.08.06 21:12 UTC
P'raps I could do with some of your pills!
Karen
- By jazzywoo Date 24.08.06 09:14 UTC
All I can say is if the memory foam pillows are as good as the mattresses then you have the best nights sleep ever!!!.  We got a memory foam mattress the other week and I am so impressed with it.  It is the best bed I have ever had.
- By jazzywoo Date 13.01.07 11:22 UTC
I really need a new pillow but at the moment can only sleep on my back.  Does anyone think a memory foam pillow will be any good for this?
- By jazzywoo Date 13.01.07 11:44 UTC
Also forgot to say I am struggling to lay really flat.
- By Ems Mum [gb] Date 13.01.07 12:02 UTC
Hi Jazzywoo,
Possibly the memory foam pillows will help as they're designed so that your neck isn't out of line with your body as with most pillows. (look into buckwheat also-helped my dad). I have trouble lying flat ( still having problems from pregnancy 5 yrs ago) & I find a rolled up soft towel under the small of my back helps
- By jackyjat [ru] Date 13.01.07 12:17 UTC
Michelle Memory Foam Pillows are the best thing since sliced bread!  My neck problems and associated migraines have decreased considerably since buying memory foam pillows.  I say pillowS as I started off with the Argos £15 version and when that started to wear out (18months) I forked out a considerable sum of money on a Tempur pillow and would struggle to go back to a feather pillow.

http://www.bedexpert.co.uk/products/details/-/17/  is where I got mine from at good price and service too.

I can sleep comfortably on my back and side too.

Hope this helps but they do take a short while to get used to; once you are you'll never look back.

Best wishes

My local Dunelm store are selling those pillows that Jacky posted above for £35.00 each.

Michelle, Do you have a Dunelm?
- By jazzywoo Date 13.01.07 13:22 UTC
Thanks Lou :), yes we have a Dunelm just up the road from us.  Will get OH to have a look later after I have been to the chiropractor.
- By ali-t [gb] Date 13.01.07 16:25 UTC
I got mine from asda and it is great.  They used to sell them singly now in packs of two.  think they are approx £20
- By jackyjat [ru] Date 13.01.07 17:33 UTC
Thank you for making my day justlou!  Did you have to tell me that?  And there's me thinking I was a moneysavingexpert!   I even saved up £1 coins in a jar to get the money for mine.  Just think, I could have spent the extra on Ribena and truffles.

Cheekychow, the Asda ones are probably similar to the Argos ones and good for a while but don't last.  I've got a latex matress on my bed that's done well for 25years now (and outlasted two husbands ) and I feel that Tempur pillows will be as good (although I don't expect another two husbands, or even one!).

I shall have a stroll around Dunelm the next time I am passing.  It's out of town in Gloucester and I always forget it's there as I rarely drive past - I need some fitted sheets so good excuse.
- By newfiedreams Date 13.01.07 18:24 UTC
Don't forget E-Bay, I've just bought a memory foam mattress....great value...do a search and see what's on there...but I would only buy from people having 100% feedback on these items as some are decidely inferior quality! All the best, Dawn
- By marguerite [gb] Date 13.01.07 17:44 UTC
Funnily i've been looking at the memory foam mattress and pillows as well, as I thought it might help me sleep at night, due to all the aches and pains I have, but the mattress will have to wait till I save up the money for it, but could afford one of the pillows, good to hear comments about them and they are as good as they say they are. Will check some of the links you have given. Thanks.
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 13.01.07 23:48 UTC
Me too, my mattress is completely done, there is a spring sticking in an unmentionable place as  i type  Mattress is not that old - so I think it must be more to do with my weight :-(
Will have to check out prices of memory foam ones, do the mattress topper ones work? or are you better going for the full mattress?

Ikea and M&S do them too for a reasonable price which might be worth checking out.
- By Annie Goz [gb] Date 14.01.07 15:47 UTC
Looking at a new pillow which gives support to neck and shoulders, but some one else asked this question if they are warm in winter what happens in the summer
- By jackyjat [ru] Date 14.01.07 15:57 UTC
I do keep my pillow in a cotton pillowslip and although it doesn't fit perfectly, does the job and of course makes it easier for washng (although my tempur comes with cover).  I absolutely hate being hot at night ( nearly wrote something else then!!!! phew!!), but the pillow is just fine and doesn't make you sweat!
- By ceejay Date 14.01.07 16:55 UTC
Yep they make you sweat - or rather reflect your heat.  I have tried a cheap memory foam pillow - Tesco's because I used to get a lot of shoulder pain (had the numb arms etc too for a while)  Pillow didn't help.  However we have a latex top to our mattress and I can tell you that if you are at that age - it is not comfortable.   Touch wood but joint pains are better at moment - hot flushes have eased off somewhat so sleep better these days.  Have investigated joint pain - it has been put down to 'unexplained joint pain due to being Coeliac'.  I wondered about the Raynauds, thyroid trouble - auto-immune problems that often accompany Coeliac disease.  My sister gets over active thyroid - I am underactive, she has had Raynauds too.
- By Lozi [gb] Date 17.01.07 06:58 UTC
We have a fairly cheap mattress on our bed, OH kept getting a numb arm as he sleeps with it curled up under his head, (looks really uncomfortable to me!) and I started getting a neck pain.  We then invested in a memory foam topper from QVC with a special cover that helps control temperature in winter and summer.  IT IS FANTASTIC.  It is so lovely to climb into bed, its only about 4inch deep but we seem to sink into it, I love it.  I have not thought about pillows but will do now.

what make was it off qvc
- By Lozi [gb] Date 19.01.07 19:08 UTC
Hi briedog

Sorry it took me so long to reply, ...puter problems

This is the item - Restore Memory Foam Mattress Topper with Isotherm Cover.  I think the cover helps with temp control.  We love it.

Regards
Lozi
