Aaaaarrrgh!!!

Shay got his paws on a box of M&S choclates whilst out on our walk this morning.  I can only think that a fox must have scavanged them from a bin or something (but who throws away chocolate??

Anyhow, I don't know how many he scoffed...he found the box in the bushes and it was not easy for me to get to him so by the time I realised he had something and got to him, he'd had a good few minutes scoffing time.  It is possible that he ate the lot I suppose but I can't know for sure.  The box was 390g and it was a mixture of milk, dark & white chocolates.  That was about an hour ago and I'm now waiting for the vets to open so I can give them a call.  Shay is a big lad and weighed 52.5kg at last weight check (last Saturday).  He seems ok at the minute and seems to want his breakfast  which he won't be getting, i might add!

Does anyone know off hand if that amount of chocolate is likely to be harmful???

Do you know if it was a WHOLE unopened box?  Or was it a box that he found?     Mine still adore grabbing hold of an (empty) choccie box and giving it a good licking......after all.....there might just be a teensy weensy bit of choccie on there somewhere!!

Seriously though - Thor is about 30 kg, and he scoffed about 1/3rd of a tin of Green & Blacks COCOA before Christmas - I panicked (of course) took him down to the vets & they checked with G & B - apparently had he, at his weight consumed the whole tin there would have been cause for concern.   Now Shaw weighs about half as much again as Thor, and the chocs (if there were any) aren't going to be as concentrated as the cocoa powder - fillings etc as well - so shouldn't really cause too much concern.

However, if you have some Pro-kolin, give him some!

No, I don't know if the box was unopened but there was definite chomping going on whilst I was trying to find a way to get to him.

Well, I rang the vet and he advised me to bring Shay in.  Vet reckons that, even by worst case scenario that he got the whole box, that it shouldn't cause him any great harm.  He gave Shay a shot of something (a multi-vit, I think) to boost his liver function whilst it is dealing with the toxins.  At least the walk to and from the vet should have burned off some of the calories!

That dog will be the death of me!  He seems nigh on indestructible but my nerves grow ever more frayed by the day   Now I need chocolate!! :D

Thor and Shay seem to have alot in common, Margot....impeccable taste in chocolate  :D

This calls for Lucy to dole out the truffles!!! :D

Glad Shay is none the worse for wear........Thor still hopefully snuffles at the empty boxes as they go in the bin.....:)

Ooh, truffles! Glad he's ok - my George would probably do the same, he's certainly scoffed enough chicken and fish bones etc in the park that I'm amazed he's never had a blockage!

Are you still in need to chocolate ? I will PM you some truffles if you want :D :D

How is Shay now ? I presume no worse for his little snack :)

Shay is absolutely fine...not even so much as an upset tum to show for his gluttony!!  I'm sure his stomach is lead lined

Thanks for the offer but I'll give the truffles a miss on this occasion...but only because I'm off out for dinner in a bit and don't want to spoil my appetite :)  With hindsight, it wasn't chocolate I needed yesterday but a valium sandwich might have done the trick :D  As it was, an afternoon of retail therapy and coffee and cake with a friend sorted me out :)

A few yrs ago my staffie raided under the xmas tree & ate 8 large selection boxes. At the time I did not know chocolate was bad for dogs, but she was ill for a couple of days & then fine!

So I think dogs can eat a fair ammount of the stuff & be OK
