Hi,
Just a query. Jack is a 17 month old GSD dog and is still weeing like a girl. I would just like to know are there some dogs that just don't cock their leg, or is he still alittle young. I have never actually seem him even try.

Over the past month or two, my youngest cocker who is 2.5yrs has found a lamp-post on our daily walk that he feels confident enough to 'cock' over! In the garden at home, he knows his place at the bottom of the pecking order and doesn't feel the need to do anything other than stand, rarely lifting more than a pad or two off the floor.
I've known two dogs who've never cocked, both entire.
Has Jack been castrated as this can make a difference?

My Am cocker used to cock his leg, until he went for the big snip!!!! Now he wees like a girl.
Where as I have a femail rottie that cocks her leg!!!!
Lea :)

Hi - I have an 18m old entire Gordon Setter who very much wees like a girl and I mean squats right down! He has been seen to 'cock' his leg but this is quite rare and when in need of a wee will squat right down!
You are not alone - he is such a 'big' dog too so very unfeminine and I remember one day whilst he was squatting down and I commented good boy - and a lady raised her eyebrows so I explained that he perhaps spent too much time watching his mum! But she replied don't worry I have a bitch that pees like a boy!!
He may cock his leg all the time but I don't hold out much hope and have come to except that he will always pee like a girly! :)

Trust a gordon to find the lazy way to have a pee!
Jill

Only one of the three Jill!!! But yep a lazy setter indeed save energy for running ;)

My boy will be 2 in April and he wees like a girl. However he HATES standing on 1 back leg. I think it goes back to his torn cruciate. Plus, Milo has no possessions and guards nothing. I don't hold much hope of our 'pack' acquiring any new territory in the near future. ;-)

My MIL's dog is coming up 4 and has never cocked his leg, he has been neutered in the last year.

Ebony didn't cock his leg until he was well over two (still entire) - he doesn't even do it that often now - just lazy. His brothers are the same!

Thanks for everyones replies its good to hear he's not the only one
My 11 year old border collie has never cocked his leg in his life. He was castrated at 12 months.

I have heard of many GSD's even entire ones not cocking their leg, especially those who are well trained and respecting a lower place in the hierarchy.
Castration before puberty often stops males from developing the behaviour, one reason people choose to have it done.
Leg cocking is one of the traits I and many find a negative in males.

Whoa, a negative...leg cocking? Isn't it a very typical male trait in most breeds of dog?

One reason I prefer not to live with them :D

I have a 2.5 yr old entire Groenendael who has never cocked his leg - he just kind of squats and sprays it up the underside of his belly - YUK

- I'm forever rinsing him off. He is lower in the pecking order and very respectful of his dad which I suspect is why he does it :D

It is quite interesting how differently males wee wen they don't cock their leg.
Our boy while in quarantine, and occasionally even now when he really needs to empty his bladder rather than feels the need to mark squats down so low that he never wees on himself. Others just stand there like a horse without any attempt t squatting, an others just wee all over their front legs :(

Ebony squats but being a tall leggy greyhound he gets his front paws with out fail. My father-in-law's 10 year old greyhound is a nightmare for cocking his leg though - the minute you put something outside he wees on it - bins, plants, garden furniture, he's killed so many of my plants, and going on a walk takes an age, so I quite like that Ebony does it like a girl despite having to wipe his paws all the time!

Sorry this is a late reply, was otherwise occupied -just wanted to say that my Arnie was neutered at 4 ½ months of age and so I assumed he'd never start cocking his leg. He did -aged 3. Some do, some don't when neutered BEFORE they have started doing it.
