Topic Dog Boards / General / how long without a wee at night for a labrador?
- By Emma mum of poj [gb] Date 13.01.07 21:29 UTC
I was hoping that you might be able to help me have a bit more time in bed!  I currently take Poj out for a wee at about midnight every night, getting out of bed to do it, and then her next wee is when I get up at about 7ish.  She's turned one now and I'm still doing it from her younger puppy days and now I'm scared to stop in case she wees indoors.  She shows no signs of distress, no whimpering to go out or anything but I don't know how long to expect her to be able to hold it and wondered how long you all leave your dogs?  I go to be at about 10 and I'd love not to get up later to take her out!

It's worth mentioning that she doesn't seem delighted at me waking her up for a wee - but she always obliges me by stumbling outside bleary eyed to perform...

How about trying her for one night?????
If she wees imside you know you have to try another route, if not you get more sleep ;)
If she does wee when you dont take her out, try taking her out 5 mins earlier per night, until you get to when you normally go to bed.
My youngest (18 mnths-2 years) ncan last from 10pm-10am when I have a lie in. But dont know how she has been trained as I havnt trained her!!!!

You say you go to bed at 10 but then you say she goes out at 12??? Put her to bed when you go and just leave her until the morning.
If you are worried about her weeing then why not add half an hour a day to her sleeping period until you get up to when you would like to get up!!!
I have labs and whilst most can go until I choose to get up, one of them barks at 8am everyday to go out. This is an improvement as it used to be 6am!!!
At a year old most of mine can go 10 hours BUT they are all different. Just add extra time each day. Good luck.

I build it up like dogcrazy suggests - when they're pups I get up every couple of hours, then as they grow it's every 3 hours, then 4 and so on until they're going the whole night.  Been a while but I think that's usually by around 8 months if that - when their bladder muscles are developed enough.  Before my spaniel left me he could hold it overnight no problem, he was around 10 months old.  You might find you need to make adjustments to the house - I learned very quickly that he'd go by the back door if I didn't let him out quick enough in the mornings (even if it was because I was getting dressed ) so I got into the habit of shutting the kitchen door.  No access to the back door - he never went indoors again first thing, no matter how long I took to find socks :D

Give it a try for a night - she'll probably be fine.

My Labrador puppy will quite happily go from 10 p.m 'til 7 a.m next morning, she has been like this for a couple of months now, her mother, however, will "shout" if she gets desperate in the night.;)

Mine have all been fine from 10ish to 7ish since they were quite young - they are always keen to go out, but they hurtle outside in a mad dash whether you let them out at 7am or 8.30, so I think they're just pleased to see me and know that it will soon be walkies time! :-)

My pup (14 weeks) goes from 10.30ish to 7.30.  Quite often she is still asleep when I go in.  She has done this without accidents from 9 weeks, as do most of her litter mates, at least that's what they tell me!

My 2 go from about 10.30ish to about 7.30ish and then Jack will bark, but i do think its more for his breakfast than anything else :eek:  after which he goes back to bed so at the weekends so do i.

From about 5 months of age my golden retriever went from 9pm to 6am. The 6am turned later and later and nowadays he's happy to wait from 8pm to 8am every day. Actually, he doesn't like going out if it's dark. Or raining. He'll go, but turn straight back around when he's done his thing!

Blige! Do you go to bed at 8pm?  I'm impressed, I should go to bed early but early for me would be 10.30ish and always up by 7am.  My dog will hurtle towards the door and often stick her head out and come back in.  She can hang on for ages after that.  I suppose it depends how much they drink in the evening as well.

Mine go out for their last wee anytime from about 9.15pm - to 11pm. I'm up weekdays at about 6.40am - but neither seems very interested in going out until their walk at about 7.15am. At weekends they often don't go out for a wee until 9am (they could go out if they wanted before this) :)

Thanks everyone.  I left her last night from 10.30pm until 7.30 this morning and she was whimpering at 7.30 - however I think she had a bit of constipation which has never happened before.  She kept straining and looking in a bewildered way at her bottom as nothing was coming out - bless.  She's perfectly fine now and I think it was a bone she had yesterday.  Aside from this I will try her again tonight as I think the whimpering was more an upset stomach than needing a wee!

We often go to bed at 9 and all our dogs (including a Lab) will hold till whenever we get up - usually 6 but at weekend it can be 11 ...... if they NEED to go they either bark or jangle the stair gate depending who it is but that is rare and always bad tummy style number 2s!!!

Henry has his last wee at around 9ish at night and we practically have to kick him out to have his morning one at 7.30 ish but he does hang on and waits for us to take him.  Sometimes it's around 10 at weekends.  He never asks to go out and goes on command too! bless.

I think my lot have bladders like buckets as they will often have a last wee at 10.30 pm then even though we are usually up by 8am even at the weeekends ( cup of tea and read the papers in bedafter letting them out) they will go out and sit on the door step untill I let them back in and not go untill we go on a walk sometimes not before 11.30 at week ends, They almost never poo in the garden and will wait untill they are up in the woods, however if we are planning a trip in the car to the beach or something and we don't leave till late they will go if I go into the garden and ask them to "Spend pennies" Funny lot!!!
