Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 1 week old puppy getting stuck on back??
- By coriandrich [us] Date 10.01.07 22:51 UTC
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas why this is happening.
My very good friend's Tri American Cocker had 6 puppies a week ago.
Two of the puppies are smaller than the rest. They eat well and have
nice round tummies but frequently get stuck on their backs and
can't roll back over. My friend has to go in and help them get to their
mom and when they are stuck on their back they cry constantly
which causes momma dog to be nervous.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Cori

Can I ask what kind of bedding she has for the pups, they need something that they can grab with their nails to turn back over, if she has newspaper it is not much good for gripping and moving on,  otherwise their mum should come to help and turn them over if she doesn't that is why most breeders stay within hearing distance for the first two weeks to help the little ones if the mum does not.

Her bitch is only a week into motherhood and the pups cries will distress her, the pups may possibly be on their backs from their mum giving them a quick clean, bitches do turn the pups over for a good stimulation and wash, but she will learn to go and give them a push with her nose to help or a quick lick to help them turn back over.

The best thing is for your friend to stay close, pups need a lot of rescuing in the first two weeks from getting lost and squeaking for guidance to being sat on by their mum, every little cry your friend needs to be there.
