Can anyone advise on a Photoshop issue?  I have Photoshop 6.0 (OK, not the most up to date :P ) anyway - having problems loading it so uninstalled and have tried to add it again but keep getting the error number 115.  Their on-line help (such as that is  ) is too technical for me .....

This is errors occurs because the fonts are locked in memory. The following are reasons why this error can
occur.
» Temporary directory is full
» Previous versions of FormFlow are still installed or have not been properly uninstalled.
» There is a font conflict, specifically with the CG Times WN or the Universe WN.
Verify if AutoCAD is installed. If so, remove the following fonts from the Fonts directory.
» CG Times
» Universe
» Swiss
» Universe Math
Once the fonts are removed, re-install FormFlow.

See, SEE, SEE WHAT I MEAN   How do I delete fonts if the thingymejiggy whatsit wont load    (or even if it would .... :D )

I don't even think I have this "FormFlow" thing anyway .....  I've had this disk a gazillion years (OK, maybe 5 years) and this is the first probs I've had with it.  Any help much appreciated.

Cheers, Teri :)

Go to start the search and put 'FromFlow in and see what files it brings up :)

I had this problem when we had Macafee and wanted to insatll Norton. The Macafee files weren't uninstalled properly and we had a nightmare !! I ended up doing a factor reinstall in the end

Thanks Lucy - just tried that and I don't have any files with "FormFlow" in them so I'm guessing that's a more up-to-date package .....
- By LJS Date 10.01.07 17:59 UTC
Have you seen if you have the Auto CAd installed then ?
- By Teri Date 10.01.07 18:04 UTC
Off to check :D  be back in a minute!
- By Teri Date 10.01.07 18:06 UTC
Noooooo, I don't have that either :D   I'm starting to feel poor and neglected :D
- By LJS Date 10.01.07 18:00 UTC
Also have they got a forum at all ? Might be worth posting a message ! :D
- By jas Date 10.01.07 18:04 UTC
I have Photoshop CS2 and haven't seen that error message, but I'd try checking if the problem fonts are in your fonts directory and if they are try removing them from there. You go to Control Panel, then Fonts.
- By Teri Date 10.01.07 18:07 UTC
Great Jas - heading there now :D

(pssst, methinks your Photoshop is an ickle bit newer than mine  :P )
- By Teri Date 10.01.07 18:13 UTC
Me again   Just tried that and don't have any of them so I'm guessing they are on the Photoshop disk that I'm trying to load ....
- By jas Date 10.01.07 18:16 UTC
Have you tried Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs to see if FormFlow is there? I'd also remove the old Photoshop if it is on the list.
- By jas Date 10.01.07 18:23 UTC
Also try finding CTL3DV2.DLL and renaming it CTL3DV2.OLD. Then try to re-install.
- By Teri Date 10.01.07 18:34 UTC
Hi Jas,

have checked and FormFlow is not in the prog list :(  The renaming bit - what is that for? (can you tell I'm scared .... :D )
- By jas Date 10.01.07 18:40 UTC
It is a file used by Photoshop which the Photoshop installation should replace. If you are nervous about changing it, do a search for it and make a note of the folder it is in. Then copy it to your desktop. Then change the name. Should you have any problems just copy CTL3DV2.DLL back to the folder you found it in.

But on thinking about it I'd try Safe Mode first.
- By jas Date 10.01.07 18:35 UTC
..... and if none of that works, try starting Windows (presume you are using Windows?) in Safe Mode and then try to install photoshop when in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode hit F8 as you boot up. You will be given a choice of modes - choose Safe Mode then let it continue to boot.
- By Teri Date 10.01.07 18:37 UTC
Yep, using Windows - this is all starting to sound scary :D

OH seems to expect his evening meal  hadn't realised the hour :P

I may be some time (then again, I may not get back on if I start fiddling :D )
- By RRfriend [se] Date 11.01.07 00:49 UTC
How are you getting on? Reading this makes my nerves curl  It sounds just too much like me and some computer problems I've had.
I'm feeling for you, Teri. My last major computer disaster had me in tears, nothing worked, and all I tried to do was add a laptop to our network.
I hope you are hard at work doing wonders with Photo shop, not desperately trying to make your computer work like it used to
Good luck,
Karen :p
Edited; Glad to hear you're making progress, Teri!

>Glad to hear you're making progress, Teri!

Errrrrm, not quite Karen :D  At least it hasn't gone up in a puff of smoke yet but don't hold your breath waiting on new piccies any time soon   Just received HUGE file sized piccies of my youngster and apart from cropping them in MS Editor (which I hate) there's not much else I can do with them :D  I can make them MUCH smaller pixel wise but they'd still be around 1.5MB each

Heeeeeeelllllllllllpppp  :D
- By RRfriend [se] Date 11.01.07 01:02 UTC
Oh dear! The program that handles photos on my computer, will automaticaly resize pictures when I want to e-mail them to someone. Do you have anything like that on your computer? If so, maybe you could try that, then save the resized version, and work from there?
Sorry, not very good at those things, my Photoshop is like a white dot on the map for me, not yet discovered ;-)

Hi again Karen,

I need to resize them for my website, not just emailing :(

I've posted for help on the Adobe forum but now I can't find the page anymore   :D - only hope they email notification of any replies or I'm stuffed :o  Not my day (well, night, now :P )
- By Teri Date 11.01.07 00:47 UTC
Hi again Jas,

I have tried installing with safe mode method and then (separately) renaming the file, unfortunately neither worked.  It gets as far as 59% loaded and then same error message comes up :(  Thank you VERY much for your help so far but I seem to be stuck - if you can offer any more suggestions I'm ready, willing and doing my best to work on the "able" part   I'm usually pretty good at problem solving but this one has me stumped!

Cheers, Teri

Teri did you check your temp directory? Since that was also listed as one of the potential problems. You have to delete the files in your temp directory yourself, things can really build up in there. It's also worth checking the free space on your hard disk. If your disk doesn't have a couple hundred mb free that might be stopping you. (OK rough estimate but you need at least 115MB for version 7)

Assuming you are on XP, the temp directory is C:\Documents and Settings\(your login, computer name)\Local Settings\Temp

Hi Lori :)

I've just done a disk clean up and when shutting down my emai program it offered to compress folders to free up disk space (does this regularly anyway) which I OK'd.  But (there's always one  ) My recycle bin is now full of stuff that wasn;t there - all to do with emails - each folder having " .bak " (without quotes) after the name.  This accounts for a lot of MBs but should I empty the recycle bin?  Am I going to lose my stored emails?

Worried - very worried here
- By jas Date 11.01.07 14:56 UTC
Whether you will lose your e-mails depends on how long Outlook / Outlook Express is set to hold them. To be safe I'd restore those .BAK files as they aren't your problem anyway. What you need to do is manually empty your temp folders. Your Temp directory on WinXP should be somehwhere like: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp. You need to turn on 'Show Hidden Files' to see it. There may also be a C:\Windows\Temp directory. To turn on Hidden Files go to My Computer / Folder Options / View and tick the box that says 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'

Once you've emptied the Temp Folders, create a folder on your desktop called Photoshop. Copy everything on your Photoshop CD into that folder. Then re-boot into Safe Mode (F8) and try to install Photoshop from the folder you created on your desktop. If that doesn't work PM me.
- By Teri Date 11.01.07 15:04 UTC
Hi Jas,

typing at same time :D  Will PM you!

Cheers, Teri

One other thought - have you installed WinXP Service Pack 2 since the last time you installed Photoshop 6? I could be wrong but I seem to remeber reading somewhere that they are not compatible.
- By Lori Date 11.01.07 15:04 UTC
Oh I never do file compression or email back up. I just leave copies on the server. The .bak extension is usually what software uses to denote a backup file which would imply an original was around somewhere but I wouldn't guarantee that without seeing your system first hand. If you are worried you could always copy the files to a CD. Then you'd have them if you deleted something you didn't mean to. Can you see the messages you want to keep?

I'll tell you two other places that hog space; temporary internet files and hibernation files if that feature is enabled. I have broadband so I set my temp internet folder to a piddly 20Mb or so. A cleaned up a friend's system and he had 2GB worth of temporary internet files!! The default is based on a percentage of disk space. Quite an antiquated method now. Hibernation is in Control Panel > Power Options > Hibernate tab. If Enable has a check in it you will lose loads of space. I always turn it off (unless you use the feature)
- By Teri Date 11.01.07 15:15 UTC
Hi again Lori,

I dump temp internet files daily along with cookies so wont have a high cache of them.  I tried to stop the hibernate feature on this lap top before but it can't be got round on usual methods unfortunately as Toshiba have over-ridden some feature (can't remember exactly what  )   The hibernate thing is a pain and I know it takes up a ridiculous amount of space

I'm going to back up everything on disk today - the last time I did this was probably about 6 months ago and I'd lose a heck of a lot of important things if it all went belly up now!

Thanks for all your patience :)
- By Teri Date 11.01.07 15:02 UTC
Have opened defrag and apparently I'm only using 15% of disk space (does that mean I need to stay in more    )

Resolved the .bak file whatsits in the recycle bin by going through MS help pages so managed to rid myself of 140MBs of things I didn't need without losing the mail (clearly I have waaaay too many emails LOL)

Thought this would help in some way towards resolving the Photoshop installation but I'm still getting the same 115 error message and always at 59%  :(   Not sure if there is maybe a problem with my disk driver on the lap top (although got this message on trying to use it before I uninstalled and tried to re-install  )

Please, any help much appreciated - even if only to advise of a free user friendly alternative to Photoshop (huffing and puffing now :D )
- By Lori Date 11.01.07 15:19 UTC
I haven't used it but I've seen a few CD'ers recommend Irfanview for resizing.

What a pain about the hibernate file. I'd be on to Toshiba support asking for a workaround. It would be about 700Mb for my PC!
- By Teri Date 11.01.07 15:26 UTC
Have just gone on to the hibernate section (automatically transfers to Toshiba panel) and the on/off part is greyed out so can't be changed   It uses 511 MB

Will have a look at that link Lori, Cheers!
- By LJS Date 11.01.07 15:48 UTC
:eek: Oh dear are you still trying to sort ot out  :D :D

I would chuck it in the bin and go and get a new one form PC World ;)

ps can't give you anymore useless tips I am afraid :D
- By Teri Date 11.01.07 17:03 UTC

>I would chuck it in the bin

What?  ..... just the disk or the whole dang thing :D :D :D  Tempted, sorely tempted!
- By LJS Date 11.01.07 18:12 UTC
The whole darn lot :D :D
- By JaneS (Moderator) Date 12.01.07 13:31 UTC
If you just want to resize photos & you have XP, there's a great little power toy you can download from Microsoft's site HERE - just scroll down to find ImageResizer.exe & install it on your laptop. Once it's installed, right clicking on any image brings up the option to resize it. Easy :D
- By Teri Date 12.01.07 13:57 UTC
Thanks JaneS :)  At the moment I am resisting the urge to take Lucy's advice so should hopefully take my mind off things :D
