I know this is a daft question for someone who has had a few dogs, and knows that mistakes happen, to ask, but does anyone know what to do with a piddling 16 week lurcher? This isn't the odd puddle - FIVE times since 7am, each of an unbelievable volume for such a wee pup. He isn't even dirty - he pees outside equaly happily, and doesn't soil in the house. Two vets have examined (though not investigated) him and say 'he's just a drinker', but this is begininning to cause some marital disharmony.

Is it in the same place each time or different spots????
Males (sigh) --- rumoured to be more difficult to toilet or house train regardless of species  ;) ;) :)

Sara, anywhere in the kitchen ( not usually the other rooms), but the kitchen flooor is quarry tiled and is as innocent of tempting odours as possible. For once I can't blame all males :-), for Ben is a total little gem in this department.

Thanks for the reply Anne. The only real positivive finding on urinalysis was a few leukocytes, but no evidence of infection even on micropsopy and culture. The specific gravity was a little low, but within normal limits. I hadn't thought of it before, but although he has the odd accident at night, he's mstly dry then although like all the dogs he has constant access to water night and day.

Hi Sharon - I have just the opposite with Buddy (now 10 months). If he goes as many as 4 times in 24 hours he's having a good day ! Wish I had that sort of bladder :)

Nah, not all males, just some difficult ones :D :D :D :D

I was thinking up the same road as Anne, but I doubt it's an infection. It sounds more behavioral.
But if you think it is an infection, you could give him some cranberry juice or capsules. I know that helped to improve and prevent UTI's in my Yorkie. She really loved chowing down on the capsules, more than drinking the juice :)

Does he piddle right in front of you or is it a kind of behind the back when you're not around to let him out thing? If it's in front of you, it's more likely to be medical. Behind your back, laziness, not clear on communicating needs to you, or just uncaring????

I had to really work hard with Chienne to have her come to me and "tell" me that she needed to go outside, esp. if I was upstairs. I've also given her some homeopathic meds that helped to tighten her muscles. The training and the meds worked well in conjunction.

But we've surrendered to the fact that if she's allowed to roam around the house at night, for some odd reason, she will either piddle or poop. It's as if she doesn't want to bother us . If she's confined to a room (ours), she'll be happy and dry all night long. So with the A/C on, we shut the door, or we use a baby gate.

I think it might be leftover from her early puppy years when she had access to a doggy door all night long and just never got into a habit of "officially" letting us know her needs.
Good luck Sharon.... I just think of the amount I've cleaned up vs. your small "horse" ;) :d I really feel for you.

Sharon,
I have heard water restriction after a certain time advised but I have never felt happy with this idea. A friend had a problem with night time soiling and adjusted feed timings and that helped. Have you logged when he is most urinarilly active:-D ie when does the floor get the most baptising. How long has this been going on? May be just a stage all be it a messy one. Not much help I know but I'm just thinking aloud, this is a queer one that's for sure. I will keep thinking as I hate being beat. Where does he sleep, could he have got chilled and would that show up on test results? How about a nice homeopathic remedy,
Anne

Sharon My brothers setter was very incontinent as a puppy.
It was awful every minute pools it got to the stage he was thinking he might just give him up .
It looked like he was terrified of him and he wasent. so Vet took a chance and gave him half dosage of incontinence tabs and he got control of the bladder in three weeks
That was after he ruled out kidney infection or kidney trouble .
