can anybody explain what group placings, multigroup placings and group competition means as the kennel club site does't explain very well

Dog breeds are arranged into 7 groups in the UK.

Some shows are judged on the Group system. Others not.

At the former the Best of Breeds and Best of Not separately classified compete against each other in their relevant group and are placed first to fourth.  The winner of each group providing they remain uneaten in any other competition compete for Best In show.

At Non groups shows, all unbeaten Best Of Breeds and some other Winners that do not have to go into breed classes all go in the ring at the end for the judge to choose Best In show

Can anyone tell me if there is a time limit in which to get your 25 points? Also is there any points for Reserve Best in Show?

No time limit, and as of 1.2.2006, 3 points for Reserve Best In Show. You couldn't get these points prior to that, when my girl won her's as a youngster.

Hi Kay,
I queried this about the Reserve Best In Shows as my Australian Shepherd won two Reserve Best In Shows on the trot and after much discussion at the KC (as the wording on the ShCM form is not made very clear), the letter I have recieved states that points for R.B.I.S can only be claimed when a show is not judged on the Group system.

My boy had done really well in the North West and luckily had 5 Best of Breeds and 5 Pastoral Group 1's which gave him the 25 points needed in 5 straight shows between Feb-April last year but they wouldn't allow him to use any points for his R.B.I.S (which he got in show 3 and 4 and would have given it him earlier than his 14 months old).

It took ages for the KC to answer my letter and when I phoned I was told that it was because no-one was completely sure of the correct answer !!!!
