Nine years later, I used a tamagoutchi toy and lots of sweeties.....2 stones later if I drink too much I still look for a smoker who might let me have one.
BUT... I look at smokers lighting up and still think 'yea I'm free!'
So do it one day at a time it is worth it.

My Mother gave up in her 80th birthday (after smoking at least 20 a day all of her life!) with Nicotine patches from the Doctor.  She said that first week was difficult and then no problem, and that was 5 years ago on the 26th of this month. :)
You can do it! :D
- By ali-t [gb] Date 01.01.07 13:03 UTC
Have you tried the allan carr method?  I've got an e-version of his book.  PM me with your e-mail address if you want it forwarded to you.  If anyone has the secret to being motivated to eat less and exercise more without breaking a sweat or getting hungry I'd love to know.
- By HuskyGal Date 01.01.07 13:06 UTC
At the moment I am using the 'If I make a move to the front door {to buy cigs }-Hit me over the head with a shovel...method!!!
 :D
Is the Alan Carr method the one where he lets you smoke while you read the book?? (eyes light up!)
- By ClaireyS Date 01.01.07 13:15 UTC
I took me 4 months to give up, it was my new years resolution 2003, I went through hypnosis, which didnt really work, I ended up on patches and smoking just 4 day  then I woke up one morning and thought I cant believe these horrid sticks are controlling my life - im better than this  so that was the day I gave up April 22nd 2003 and I havent looked back

come on girls you can do it :D
- By justlou Date 01.01.07 13:23 UTC
12 1/2 weeks for me :) I feel great!

It took about 8 attempts, but i can say now, i don't need a cigarette :D

Come on Liv :D And anyone else who wants to give up.... you can do it x

P.s...Forgot to say, Niquitin CQ Lozengers worked for me :)
- By Lea Date 01.01.07 13:31 UTC
8 years and 3 months!!!!
Went from smoking 20-40 a day to none. Took LOADS of attempts to give up over a 6 month period (I was 7 months pregnant when I eventually gave up)
But havnt had one since, even tho I have been through a very messy marriage break up which has caused and is still causing alot of stress and worry.
So it can be done :D :D :D
I also found 'smoking' a biro worked as well. It was the pysical thing of holding something between my fingers and inhaling that got me, so I used an empty biro tube to have that sensation :D
GOOD LUCK LIV :D :D :D :D :D :D
Lea :)
- By ali-t [gb] Date 01.01.07 14:11 UTC
that's the one.  It is based on the idea that you aren't giving anything up so it isn't a loss and therefore you don't have to replace it with anything else e.g. overeating.  I have never smoked but was interested in the theory and it appears to work with many people.
- By jazzywoo Date 01.01.07 14:55 UTC
YOU CAN DO IT LIV :D :D :D

And anyone else can too.  You just need lots of willpower and determination to succeed.

shh, yes I know it looks a lot like Margot's fairy dust

Way to go Liv!!! Woo hoo, you can do it girl. Do up an envelope to look like some outrageous, much desired Prada bag. Take all the money you'd spend on cigs and put in the the virtual Prada - you'll be smiling ear to ear with your new prize soon. Big steady shoulders over here can take lots of pounding. I also have tissues, choccies and wine for the bad moments.

Go girl!! :-D :-D
- By craigles [gb] Date 01.01.07 16:14 UTC
oh go girl you can do it! I did and if I can anyone can!  May 13th 2006 I stopped smoking, some days I could willingly kill for one other days the thought makes me feel ill, i'm not gonna tell you it's gonna be easy cos it's not  but believe me the sense of satisfaction in a month will be so good ...........you'll be walking on air!  xx
- By Missie Date 01.01.07 17:09 UTC
Yes Liv, me and Leomad will be joining you soon. We've got a 'date' on the 8th at the clinic where patches are being given to all us losers :P It will be about the 5th time for me and Helen, we try it every year  but this time we are determined, though having tried going 'cold turkey' before we know we need help so this is the way we are going to do it this time. We are cutting down as from today - only buying 10 instead of 20 - so hopefully making it a bit easier by the 8th :) (I have done the cutting down routine before and it worked as I stayed off them for 5 whole months!)
I've also got lots of mints and toffees to chew/suck on ;) So I expect my weight to go up and up and my fillings to fall out :P  but I don't really care this time. I am determined!
- By LJS Date 01.01.07 17:55 UTC
It is easy ;)

If you make yourself believe it will be difficult it will be ;) :D

I gave up 4 years ago and was a right chuffer :rolleyes:

Think that this is the first day of the rest of your elongated life :D :D

This is the conversation I had with my doctor:

Me: I'd like to give up smoking and would like to know if you can offer any help?
Doctor: Why? all the damage being done is reversable if you quit before you're 35 you've got years! (I'm 29)
Me: Would patches help me?
Doctor: only 20% of people on nicotine therapies actually give up.
Me: I'd really like to give up..
Doctor: My grandmother smoked 20 a day til she died at 86
Me: I'm also sick of the awful cough
Doctor: Its probably viral.

I'm surprised he didn't give me a packet of fags on my way out! Thankfully he left the surgery (wonder why:rolleyes:) and my new doctor is being much more helpful!!
- By Lori Date 01.01.07 20:13 UTC
Oh I'll have to stock up on more choccies and wine then!! I'll have to hunt for some tips I thought one good one was to wash all your clothes after you quit. Everything will be really fresh and no reminders of those tortuous little sticks. My dad quit - took him about 15 years but he finally succeeded. He's not smoked in 20 years now (4 packs a day for over 40 years). My BIL just chewed the gum for a year. He didn't care if he was still hooked on the nicotine, he just wanted to get off the ciggies (dad died of lung cancer and that hit him hard). You hsould have seen his jaw muscles, they were huge! :-D
- By ClaireyS Date 01.01.07 20:45 UTC
I was addicted to wine for a couple of months after I gave up - used to wake up in the morning fancying a glass of chardonnay
- By luvhandles Date 01.01.07 20:54 UTC
I've never  smoked so haven't a clue what your going through, however.......good luck - YOU WILL DO THIS!!!

I am so rubbish,I want to give up and worry about all the damage to my lungs, but I just cant.
I actually bought patches, but when I decided to use them,I had them so long they were out of date.
Good luck with this, and when you succeed, tell me your secret.

My step-mother used hypnosis and it worked.

My ex-manager, when I worked for Shelter, used to put the money she'd spend on ciggies away and every quarter or so would go & buy herself a piece of jewellery from the antique shop across from us so she had something to show for all her willpower!

Just think of how rich you'll be - I saw in a doctor's surgery that if you smoke just 20 a day, that's over £1700 saved in 1 year if you give up.

Both my grandparents (Dad's parents) died of smoking related cancers...I never knew my grandfather as he died years before I was born.   My nan died when I was 2.
- By Lissie-Lou [gb] Date 02.01.07 06:38 UTC
I wish I could give up.  I hate it!  I'm 29 and have smoked since I was 13, presently smoke a few under 20 a day!

Funny thing is, I've just come back from my parents house.....Dad doesn't know I smoke, and whilst I was there I had 1 ciggie, if that, a day, and it didn't bother me.  Got home, knew there were cigarettes here and had to smoke them - it's ridiculous, and I'm disgusted with myself.

I WILL give up this year....honest!
- By Balibee Date 02.01.07 11:48 UTC
Well done all you girlies,  keep going ..............

x
- By arched [gb] Date 02.01.07 12:10 UTC
Not a smoker, never have been and don't understand why people do smoke.........................................BUT those of you who want to give up I wish you every success and good luck. It must be so hard to give up something you love.

Try putting the saved money to something you never thought you'd have - treat yourselves !.

it is not easy and i applaud you all for trying, it is over 21 years ago that i gave up smoking , but i could still sometimes pick up a cig, when i am extremly stressed, and there is someone standing next to me that lights up, and i get a whiff of the smoke yes i could take a drag on the weed of death, but i don't. but keep on going you will make it .

Gave up on July 11th 2000 (day after my 21st Birthday and my graduation from uni).  I had no lapses (until about 6 months ago - which made me feel sick) and I went cold turkey.  It is horrible, but you will do it.  Just think how much further you'll be able to walk the doggies when you are not panting all the way!

Keep positive and each day gets easier!

WELL DONE ALL YOU FAG FREE PEEPS! :-P
