Im asking a question for a friend who dos not have net access she has got a bitch who is on day 61 from first mating and 59 from second she has been taking her temp for the past few days 2 days ago it dropped to 99 then went back up to 101 then today earlier in the evening it dropped to 99 again but this evening its has gone back up 100 but now she has started panting this will be her second litter and she said last time her bitches temp dropped and stayed down but how acurate is taking her temp to inpending birth?

I wish I could help you as I struggled with temp taking last time, my bitches was all over the place. I am not sure if I was doing it right. My bitch is day 60 from one mating and I am just about to take her temp. From what I know the temp should rise higher than it has been before and then suddenly drop lower than normal but I suppose all bitches are different.

personally I wouldnt rely on temperature taking to know exactly when birth is imminent as I had a similar problem with my girl.
Temperature dropped then back up then down like a yo yo I just took it as a sign that she was on her way I knew it was near when she wouldnt leave my side and her eyes told me she was in pain. I stayed with her continually and she delivered within 24 hours one day earlier than her due date 6 beautiful puppies now 5 months old.

Ditto, I have relied on the bitches behaviour.

Nope you have ti back to front which is why you are probably getting it wrong.

The book of the bitch explains it very well for anyone inexperienced.

Norm is about 101 but during pregnancy it sits around 100 the drop when it is the " real " drop tends to go down to 98 ish   a lot lower than the examples a few have given here. To me that suggests perhaps some people are missing it.

I poped over there to go help out if i could the bitch is a lovley girl she got a little excited when i got there nothing amiss there when she first layed down she was panting really quiet heavily then as she settles its was more like just heavy breathing maybe a little faster than usuall when i left she was fast asleep on the sofa yet again just breathing a bit heaver and faster than normal so my friend is not completley sure she has started when my bitch had pups last year when she stared panting she didnt stop and my sisters bitch i saw her during the day and we wasnt sure if she had started or was just really hot ( she had pups right in the middle of summer when it was really hot) and i didnt see her again untill she had already had a pup i stayed for the last 5 because my sister was freaking out with all the gore, so i guess we will just have to wait and see

Temp drop when done accurately is pretty reliable. as anything only as good as the method and regularity it is done.

I have taken temp with every litter I have had and it has been spot on everytime.

In the wide etc for most animals it is the same . prolonged temp drop them offspring generally within 24-26 hours.

I agree Blue.  I have used it for over 20 years and find it extremely reliable but it's important to learn what is a normal pattern for an in whelp bitch and not just take a couple of readings out of context and say it doesn't work. ;)  It is also invaluable as a guide that something is wrong and the bitch needs unzipping.
But when things go wrong, it's just put down to fate rather than lack of breeder knowledge these days.

I prefer to watch my bitch closely,my last bitch had pups a week early and knew it was going to happen as I didn`t let her out of my sight that week .

I took my bitches temperature last night and it was 37.5. An hour or so later when I went to bed she was in her Whelping box and panted on and off for over an hour. She then decided she needed a drink and went promptly back to sleep

This for me is very normal with any dog.  37.5 is the normal temp for a pregnant bitch. I am confused why you are confused.

In new money a drop can be as low as 36.3-36.6 I have had them all this low.

You need to read the explainations on taking temps and then only use it when you have it well and truely understood or it is a waste of time.

For me it is invaluable with a breed that whelps generally early and often can be unpredictable. :-)

I didn't say I was confused...did I:confused: I know that 37.5 normal ;-) I just didn't find it reliable for me last time, that's all, allthough I know alot of people swear by it.

Appologies I thought you were confused by her behaviour and that was why you gave the example. ( Sorry) :-)

It made me confused :-))  because both her behaviour and the temp were normal so couldn't understand the example :-))).

No need to apologise at all, I typed that early this morning, it wasn't an example I just tagged it on the end...probably not relevant but I didn't get much sleep as she was so restless all night.

I do that also but use the temp guide as a reassurance things are going normally. Generally if the temp is very low and they haven't had the pups 24-26 hours later or the first one anyway this to me would be a sign things are being held up for some reason.

Day 62 here and her temp is 36.8 or 98.2, so hopefully something should be happening within the next 24 hours.
