Something I've been meaning to post for a while is to ask people what dog they would have - given they had the right circumstances...I got a a golden because of previous experience, I knew we had rooms for her/big areas to exercise her in and I love thier natures (and in my eyes one of the most beautiful dogs around) however there are other breeds I like the look of, but circumstatially I simply can't have....

For example, if I had a fair bit of land of my own, with some expanse of water I'd probably go for a newfoundland - I think they're absolutely stunning, and everything I've read about them makes me like them even more.

I also love bulldogs, I think they such smart dogs but clearly not a breed to have with a bouncy, high energy nutcase like the one I currently have....

I also love springers, but after reading about them don't think I could handle thier endless quest for activity...

Which dogs would you have and why....?

Ooh, there's so many!  One breed I've always been in awe of is Great Danes, I just think there's something about them that I can't put into words properly.  The life span puts me off though - I know too many people that have lost them at 4 and 5.

I think Anatolian Shepard dogs are beautiful aswell but they can be a bit iffy with other dogs apparently which doesn't go well with whay I do for a living and also you have to be very careful to socialise properly as they can be guardy to the extreme from what I have read and been told.

I have wanted a full Rottie sine I got my Am Cocker over 3 years ago. I actually picked her up in Dec so have fullfilled that dream
The dog I would like, but dont think I ever will have is a Grey Neopolitan Mastiff.
I went to crufts nearly 3 years ago and saw one walking through the car park, I fell in LUUURVVVVVVVVVEEEEEE
ALTHOUGH, I couldnt live with the slobbering so that is a breed I will always love from afar :(

i always wanted a rottie & finally got my boy 2 1/2 years ago & he has met every expectation.
i do really like Leonbergers but when i spoke to owners at discover dogs they said they cant do the exercise i do with my dogs:(
also really like giant schnauzers & old english mastiffs, but there is not a breed rescue for the mastiffs so it is just seeing if one ever turns up- i beleive in fate, all my animals chose me. didnt go looking for any of them.
but Karen dont be put off by the great dane lifespan thing, when i got my girl i was forever being told-'oh they dont live past 6 do they!'
well my little girl is now 9 & still enjoys good 2 hour long walks.

There is infact 2 rescues for the mastiffs. A breed club rescue and also another independent one that has just started up!!

My dream dogs are what I have....my mastiffs!! I would also love a pug though and used to have a cairn terrier and would love to have another as he was a fantastic little dog. In fact as seriously considering another cairn at the moment as my daughter is wanting to do some junior handling classes and obviously can't do it with the mastiffs so am considering a cairn.

thanks paula, but are they for old english as well as Bulls? i must admit i havent looked since i got my boy- 2 dogs are enough until i either win the lottery or become Mrs Robbie Williams :D

I'm not sure what they have for bull mastiffs but for the english mastiffs there are 2 rescues!! I have never had anything to do with bull mastiffs.

I currently own my two favouriote breeds - borzoi and border collie. If I didn't work I would have a german shepherd too.

If I won the lottery and had endless space and time I would have masses of dogs...

Hounds - borzoi, saluki, sloughi, greyhound

From the working group - leonberger, hovawart & great dane

The pastoral group - powlish lowland sheepdog, pyrenean sheepdog, smooth collie, australian shepherd, belgian (terv or groen) and a sheltie.

From the terrier group I'd have a border terrier or two

From the gundogs - english setter, large munsterlander and flat coat retriever

From the utility group - schnauzer and dalmation

From the toy group - chinese crested

i guess im lucky because the dog i always wanted is the one i have , a GSD, i have lots of time and lots of space, before i got him people said "its not a good first dog breed" and they were right but who wants a practice dog!

I currently have labradors and a rotti. Both breeds I love to bits.
If I could add any breed to them it would have to be a newfoundland. Have always loved them but just dread the grooming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really do like the Munsters, I've had them since the end of 1987, although the size of the genepool depresses me.

I would seriously think about an English Springer again, black & white & show bred this time but if the docking ban comes in that puts me off too.

Basset Fauve de Bretagne - look like great characters and such lovely expressions.

Did like the Red & White setter but some of the temperaments & health problems put me off - sorry Rox!

I got my dream dog last year -after wanting one for 32 years (!!) I finally got a Papillon.

I'd love a St Bernard in many ways and have thought of it since about 1986, BUT I also know I probably wouldn't be suited to one as I love fast, energetic dogs. :)

I'm very lucky as I already own my dream breed, a Newfoundland :)

There are quite a few other breeds I would love to own if circumstances permitted (in no particular order): Spanish Water Dog, Akita, Chow Chow, Great Dane (black preferably), Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, Tibetan Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound & Pug :)

Same here, my dream breed is the dobermann and now I have two :D and my dream dobe is a red and now I have one!  I'd dearly love a red and a fawn both with tails (and good coats), maybe one day I'll get them!

Of the other breeds, I'd love - and was planning to get - an Anatolian Shepherd, until a helpful breeder sent me a very, very detailed breed profile.  It dissuaded me - they just don't fit in with what I expect from a dog.  I could lie and say I don't mind dogs that aren't that sociable with other dogs, or don't always do what I want when I ask them - but I would be lying.  In truth it'd drive me mad :D

Another dog I would dearly love is a Malinois - and I did mention on here a while back about contemplating a pup in a year or two.  That's also fallen by the wayside a bit - the spaniel I rehomed recently showed me that at this time in my life at least, I'm just not ready for that level of energy without going a little crazy :D

I'd also love to get a Sibe - again, too much energy and I like dogs I can let off the lead (tho if I ever get enough land, maybe one day i might get one and a mali...).  Also the pug (tho it'd be a small herd :) ), beagle, any sighthound and schipperke.  Slightly off-breed, I absolutely love rotti X GSDs (so I have my perfect trio, really!), but Opi has swayed me to her particular look - I think I'd be lucky to find another with just the right balance of both breeds to get her sort of look again.  One day I will try though!

I've got my ideal dogs too - deerhounds, Irish Wolfhound and Shetland Sheepdogs.

I've always had a yen for an Old English Mastiff but apart from that my desires are other sighthounds - greyhounds, salukis, whippets. And when I get old(er) :) and not able to exercise proper sighthounds I shall have Italian Greyhounds.

I would like to own a Chessie in the future as they really appeal to me, but Tollers are my first love :)

Don't know about having a 'dream' dog really. I love the two that I have at the moment and have no desire to have any other breed at the moment. Nothing else inspires me - I know a few really nice dogs, but wouldn't get one myself:) We may get another Aussie at some stage or, if we don't, we might get something smaller or needing less input/exercise/angst :D

since a very young age wanted a st bernard, had various breeds and crosses over the years and now have a leonberger, wow what a dog, big, gentle, kind, loving, full of fun. think i have found the dog of dreams, but dont tell anyone or else they will all want one.

When I marry a millionaire and get my large house, have plenty of money to replace all the household contents it will destroy and have an enormous garden it can zoom around in, I'd love an afghan..

I have my dream breed, the Large Munsterlander. I now have 3 and would love more :D

If I couldn't have these then I would look at the Irish Red & White Setter. There's just something about these larger gundogs that appeal :D

I also admire the Afghan, the Newfoundland (landseer preferrably :) ) and the Alaskan Malamute. I don't think I'd go back to the English Springer, but you never know :D

I wish that Afghans were naturally about 16 inches high   that would be my dream dog :D :D

Since they aren't,  I have the Bedlingtons, I dreamed of having one for 40 years so I guess I have my dream dog :p

I do admire Manchester terriers and Beagles too tho and several other breeds :) :)

My absolute dream dog would be a long haired working sheep dog, i have the short haired version now, and hope to get one in the not so distant future, so not far off that dream.
HOWEVER, there are absolutely loads of dogs that i like the look of and would love to own one of, but the list is far too long and includes almost all the gundog, working and pastoral groups, so i don't think i will ever own all of them, but in reality i love my wsd's/BC's too much!

I already have my dream breed and when we were able to move to a property with more land the only change we made to our dogs was having more of the same breed. Wouldnt dream of changing.

I would love to have been brave enough to have a newfoundland, what a gentle giant of a dog. My friend has one and he is gorgeous, but when he has a sneezing fit .... omg the whole room is covered in slobber. She also hoovers and mops about 4 times a day with him. So I like the fact that i can go and have a cuddle and then leave her to get on with him, whilst I come home to my lazy ckcs    lol

Oh Dill, there is a 12 - 14" high afghan you know :)  It has the same hideous coat that matts when you turn your back for a second, but looks gorgeous when just groomed. They have the same fun loving nature of a full sized afghan - but are also easily trained.

You're right! When I used to handle afghans a lot of exhibitors would also have powder puffs and be legging it from one end of the show to the other! Also, on speaking to a lot of crested owners at Crufts one year a lot said they had afghans in their younger years and these were the the more manageable mini versions! :D :D

Having met Powderpuffs at shows I don't think they fit the bill for me :)  though there are similarities, I haven't found the coat to have quite the same texture and they don't have the same body shape,  can't comment on personality as a show is such an artificial environment and a 'snapshot' afternoon is no good as a judge :) :)  Nice thought tho :) :)

But I would add to that, if I could - and I love sooo  many breeds it would be A LOT of dogs :) I'd have a springer, viszla, weimaraner, GLP, WSD, rottie, dobe, great dane, dalmatian, wolfhound, bloodhound, bullmastiff, DDB... if each day was 20 times longer and I had a big big house and garden and was very rich :)

And I forgot some. The leonberger, border terrier, patterdale, english setter, irish water spaniel, curly coated retriever and BSD. And possibly also a bulldog. And a husky and a saluki.

well,am really pleased with my six Mastiffs at present,well apart from one wind bag that is,hahahaha
but I really fancy a French Bulldog,absolutely adore Bloodhounds,but I believe they need to work,

Oh, I love goldens too, they are so gogreous IMO!

I love most breeds of dogs but choosing one to live with us then I'd prefer them to have the following,
1) Long hair (fluffy coat)
2) big droopy ears
3)big brown eyes
4)black nose
oh yes and not forgetting the main thing BIG loving personality

I'd be tempted by most of the gundogs - Large Munsterlanders,FCRs, all the setters, Clumber spaniels, some different colour American cockers to go with my buff boy etc. But to be honest my favourite breed of all is what I have, Cavaliers! :-)

I love vizslas and have one. If i had enough time, energy and money i love alot of breeds mainly gundogs.
I would have FCR, large munsterlander (sp?), Harliquin great dane, border collie and perhaps a working cocker (don't think the last will ever happen!!!)
but i am happy with what i have and vizslas are definately my dream dogs

i already have my dream dogs toy poodles!!. they are so loving, when they look at you with those lovely dark eyes i just melt,they also are happy at home on my lap or running like hooligans out in the paddock.

I have always dreamed of getting a golden since my first dog when I was 11 and we have now got one.  BUT, I would love a bernese mountain dog, so would my OH.  We have ever only seen one and fell in love with him straightaway.  Did seriously consider one of these instead of a GR but felt a GR would suit us better with a young family.  We will definately be getting one in the future but not for a couple of years or so (basically OH won't let me have one until we have bought our own house :rolleyes:) :D  Better start saving....... ;)
