Hi All,

Im after a bit of advice. I have an interview for a Dog Warden position in a couple of weeks time and wonder if anyone is a Dog Warden or knows anyone who is. Im trying to do as much research as possible and wonder if anyone can offer any words of advice like what sort of questions I may get asked etc.

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

I failed on a job interview (dog warden) very many years ago because, when I asked a question at the end of the interview (you know they always expect you to ask something!), I was later told I showed that I didn't know enough about the department (note, not the job).

the dog wardens near me hide in bushes and jump out at poeple who haven't picked up poo!  Sorry that is of no help for the job but always expect the unexpected at interviews.  i work in a totally different field but would expect something about legislation and roles and responsibilities both on your part and those of the dog owners.

Perhaps brush up on any changes to legislation that may come into being in the future.  My guess is that this is a District Council position so read up on their website too.

PS I'd always recommend a book called Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions (currently on 3 for 2 in Waterstones).  It's brilliant for interview preparation regardless of the role.

I got offered the position of dog warden years ago but ended up turning it down, I cant remember what questions they asked though.  Remember dog wardening isnt really about the dogs you "catch" its an environmental health thing and is more about fining people for not clearing up after their dogs (unless you live in an area where strays are a particular problem, round my way they catch about 1 a week :) ) Of course you will need good "people" skills too.

I had an interview a few years back now and beforehand I contacted the head dog warden and explained that I had an interview and could I spend the day with one of the wardens...I didn't get the job as it went to someone that was doing the job on a temp basis but don't think it did me any harm. At the interview I got shown a load of pictures of dogs and asked how I would deal/approach the dog and what it's body language was showing, also as someone has said don't forget that they are part of the environmental health section so make sure you know something about that. Perhaps they may ask a topical question relating to the Dangerous Dogs Act.

If I were interviewing you I would like to see knowledge of:

the local laws relating to dog ownership
the local council in general
where most people take their dogs
where to recommend dog walkers go, safe places for offlead romps etc
breeds and their characteristics
how to break up fights and attacks
how to deal with people; if you said you preferred dogs to people I wouldn't be interested
DDA and the country code
local training clubs and if you had any relationship with them
KC good citizen dog scheme and listed training club status
